What do you think of the Bond Texas Defender in 44 Magnum?
« on: March 27, 2003, 12:56:29 PM »
I carry a full size 1911 45 but I need a small gun that will fit in my pocket for a certain job.  I will only need to carry it for about an hour and a half a week at first but if I like it, I'll keep it more often.  I'm leaning towards the Bond Arms derringer in 44 Magnum.  I have tons of 44 components and like the fact that the 44 barrel has about an inch more rifling than the 45/410 barrels due to a shorter chamber.  What do you think of this gun and what sort of velocities could be expected with the 3" barrel with 180-240 grain bullets.  Would you opt for the lighter 180 since it will be an up close and personal gun?  Thanks for any input...

I think that I'll watch while YOU fire it.   :?

Seriously, there are better guns out there for self defense.  For instance the Charter Arms .44 Special Bulldog. It's 5 controllable shots vs 2.

Why do I say controllable? It's not considered a wise idea to use handloads in a self-defense gun, lest the DA use it to paint you as a guy who spends his time loading up special "killing" rounds and was just itching to try them out. Factory is better. I suspect that the recoil from any .44 mag factory load is going to be very hard to withstand, and that you will end up loading the thing with .44 specials anyway. If you're going to do that, why not have 5 shots instead of 2?

Take a look at this url: http://www.sixgunner.com/mcpherson/charterarms44.htm

Nope, not in my pocket!
There must be lots of better choices for a pocket gun. There couldn't be too many that would be worse! Some of the problems I would have carrying a 44 mag derringer might be: Controlability, Safety, Accuracy, slow to get into action, even slower for the second shot, limited firepower, and concealability. Those things are not small, a J frame would be better in every respect.
