Public hunting land in Steuben County
« on: September 29, 2005, 02:29:41 AM »
I'm thinking about whitetail hunting in Steuben County this year. Can anyone suggest some large tracks of public land for hunting? I was considering Canisteo or Cameron but am open to suggestion.

The NYS DEC website didn't seem to help much. Downloadable internet maps of state game land would be a BIG help.

You could also try the Erwin State land it is only miles away from canisteo and Cameron plots.  I will say I believe the Erwin plot is a more crowded than the other two.  I have never been Deer hunting on these properties but I do small game hunt all three.  They are all large tracks of forest and all have great deer hunting.

222-50,

Thanks for the reply. Erwin was one of the few parcels that I found information on. 2,500 acres and located just west of Corning. I'd prefer a larger parcel with less hunters but we'll see.

For whatever reason, the DEC does not provide internet maps or related info on any of the "state forests". You can not even determine the size or boundries of these areas. Erwin is listed because it is a "WMU" rather than a state forest.

NYS DEC should make it a lot easier to use these ares.

The DEC website used to have an interactive map showing all state lands, and allowing you to zoom in on any parcel you had an interest in. According to the website, the map is "under developement".  Lets hope they get the map back up and running soon. That was an invaluable resource.

Just an FYI

The DEC interactive map is back up and running. You can find it at
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/apps/statelands/index.cfm

Also, I just found out that the DEC will copy and mail you maps for any piece
of state land you are interested in. You can request maps for all state lands within a county if you wish. Just call the Game and Fish dept for the region you're interested in. Be forewarned though, the maps they supply are rudimentary. If you're looking for topo quality maps you'll have to look elsewhere.

Hope that is of some help.
