38-55 custom chamber reamer

How many of you 38-55 owners that have problems chambering ammo with cast bullets fat enough to shoot well would be willing to rent a pass-around reamer to open up the neck area of the chamber so that fatso 380s will sliiiiiiide right in?  There's the initial beginnings of a grumble in that direction over at the Mountain Molds Forum.  I don't have one, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Haywire, I've got a 38/55 target, and this is a problem that I guess I'm going to face. Don't know for sure yet, but we'll see.
 This sounds like the most sensible, and easiest solution to the problem.
 I might like to be on that list you're getting.
 Is this process of using the reamer a do it your self, by hand method, or does it require a 'smith?           Woodbutcher

The specifics haven't been worked out, but they're speculating that if the pilot was long enough to be in the bore before the cutting started that it would be an easy hand ream job (that sound dirty don't it).

You might be able to get away with a neck reamer only. They are available. Check with 4-dproducts at http://4-dproducts.com/chamber_reamers.html for rental; e-mail at: Reamers@4-dproducts.com

Count me in.  I LOVE my 38-55 more each time I shoot  it.  I'm shooting hand loaded Black Powder.  I would be pleased to contribute.  Currently I'm using .387.  I also just lowered the powder from (ya I know....once I realized the pressure I was subjecting things to  :oops: I lit a blessing candle in front of my picture of the old H&R Works just up the road from here)) 55 Grns FF....(just a bit hot:biggun:  
) to 40 Grns FF and 2.5 grns FFFF.  This is only at 100 yrds.  I think when I go out further I will need to add a bit more propellant (hehehe) This seems to work right now.  Do you feel the 380 will/would over more accuracy?  I ask because I'm really open to new ideas on this wonderful round.  Thanks.

Yep smokinjoe thats what we are talking about ...a reamer that will ream just about .250 down the chamber from the throat so as to allow you load a round with a bullet 1 or 2 thou over groove dia...I'm dealing with a MarlinCB in 38-55 and currently have turned my case necks to so I can chamber a .381 bullet(biggest bullet mold I have) for my .381+ groove dia....with work and winter weather coming on here in B.C. I won't  have time till next break-up to continue with this project....will probably order a reamer for myself after new year's so I won't be able to share it with you'al because customs (on both sides) wanting beer money....fact is I might have to go to my dealer to get it because it is firearm related and may need a Export permit which he buy's on a yearly base's for over $1500.00 I hear ........anyway I was wondering what you fella's are getting for groove dia. in your NEF/HR target models in 38-55?....wasn't going to get one till this option of reworking the chambers came up as I heard they mite be oversized also,just like some Marlins....if they are near the same size as my Marlin (.381+) the same reamer would work in both....thanks for your help...cheers mic...aka E.Fudd @ mtnmolds forum sez hi to Mr. Haywire...and yes I think I understand what I thought you said that you understood ...and thats what scares me.. :shock: that and still being Nrut after 58 years ....geez that gets tiresome!!!

I had mine opened up by a gunsmith. This allows me to chamber bullets that are sized appropriately for the bore.

It works well and I would do it if I hadn't already.

smokinjoe5150....do you know where a fellow can get a set of pin gages to measure the bore dia. (not groove) for the correct removeable pilot size ...Brownells does'nt have them...a search found that Meyer Gage has Z pins gages in both minus and plus for $64.50 US per set what ever that means (the plus /minus thing  :? ).....thanks for your imput......mic

Nope, sure don't. What I've done in the past is to shove a long bullet nose first into the muzzle and mike where the bore-ride section touches.

You can buy cerrosafe and make a cast of your chamber, throat, and first inch or  so of bore--it's $11 from Midway.  The stuff melts at 17o degrees F so it's very user-friendly,  Just be sure to follow the directions exactly to get an accurate measurement-- cerrosafr shrinks a bit after it solidifies, then expands out again (after an hour IIRC).  The directions are online but I forget the link to the addy.

Or you could just pound a bullet into the bore with a piece of dowell and then back out again, them measure the low spots.  Either way you'll need access to a groove mike to really get a good read.
