OK Guys, Need Some Advice
« on: November 27, 2005, 03:22:04 PM »
I've started looking at some different SGs out there, and two brands are really hard to make heads or tails of: Mossberg, and Remington.

On Mossberg's side, I've considered the 590 with Ghost Ring sights, 9 rd. capacity.

On Remington's, the 870 18" series, with the 7 rd. capacity.  I'm looking for a more utilitarian purpose SG than anything else.  My questions between the two are which is the better buy?  Lasting quality, feel, and reliability are the main points I'm concerned about.  I'm more wanting the Remmy because, I'm also considering to install this accessory: AR15 Stock Adaptor

In essence, I want to change the bottom one:

to this:

Right now my vote is more to the Remmy because on the Mossberg conversion there is too much of a gap between the P-grip and the trigger.  Has anyone tried this conversion before?  Any improvement?

What's your opinions on the quality of the Remmies versus the Mosses?

Thanks.

alright.  i am your man on this one.  theoretical nothing,  i have owned both and the mossberg 590 is the animal i would go with, and i will tell you why.   the remington's internal parts are no where as near as massive as the mossberg.  if something is likely to break, these undermachined parts are likely to cause problems.  the mossbergs action is solid,  and the parts are massive.

the mossberg is most likely not going to have the smoothest action,  but work the hell out of it,  shoot it s bunch and it will smooth up on it's own.  my dad had an old model 500 that he shot alot and it was so smooth.  my 590 broke in nice, too.

best of luck,   i suggest the mossberg.

Thanks myronman3, that does put a point in Mossberg's favor (my original choice), if not the deciding one.  I would be willing to forego the accessory and the Remmy because the need for reliability and quality is more important to me than anything else.

I just don't like that gap they made on the accessory for the Moss.  It seems too wide to be a comfortable hold, and the trigger reach looks terribly far.

The gap is shown really well here on the Moss, I'm sure you'll agree it is pretty big.  Oh well, there are plenty of other p-grip accessories out there, guess I'll just have to look around a little bit.

shotgun choices

I would go with the 870. Thats what our department uses. When I asked why this is what I got told; In a stress fire situation the first round is normally already in the chamber. The following shots are what counts. The trials with the Mossey they found because of the tolerances are looser the forearm is subject to binding in a stress fire situation. The officers even with the training was thought to be an on going problem. They use the Remington even thought a little stiffer follow up shots came with more constantly. We are told not to be gentle with the Remingtons. I personally have the Rem. express turkey and just love the shotgun. The Mossy will probley serve you well if that is they way you want to go. I just thought I would share this with you to help you make a informed decision. Sometimes simpler is better.

i have taken apart my 590, 500,  870, and winchester assault shotguns.   from a mechanical perspective,  i have more trust in the 590- there is just less that can go wrong.    the remington just isnt made out of big, strong parts.  too many little sheet metal parts in it for my tastes.

from shooting experience,  the 590 slicks up nice with some use.  like i said,  run some rounds downrange and it will slick up nice.    i have a model 500 20 gauge that i havent cleaned in well over 5000 rounds.   i have shot the hell out of it, and i aint going to clean it because i want to see just how much it takes to make it have problems.   right now, the interior of the gun is filthy.    try as i might,  it just keeps on shooting.   you cant beat a mossberg action for strength and reliablity.

the truth is, either will do fine for you.   in the end personal preferance is going to be a large part of your decision.
