I have heard that the coon prices are going to be horrible this year. Just how bad are they going to be? one guy said that you would be lucky to get $5.00 for a XXL prime coon! If thats true I might not even going to take the ones I catch I might just release them to me a coon is a lot of work for only $5.00

.17,trapping is work.If you are looking for big money,get a job flipping burgers at Mc Donalds.
Coon prices vary from area to area ,depending on the coon you have.I will get $9.00 each for my coon(green,not put up).
Coon are a predator and need to be controlled,like all animals.
If you let go any you catch,you sure aren't helping your duck and Muskrat populations.Ypu can harvest your coon and utilize them,or mother nature will take care of them---and that ain't a pretty sight.

I would like to retract my comment about letting them go I really dont care about the price I will still trap even if the price is a dollar or less but I really was just wonderingif anyone else felt the same.

I am still going to trap because I'm a trapper and thats what I do and plus trapping is a worse addiction than drugs who could quit? :grin: :grin:

.17,thats the attitude you need.
We had all kinds of so called trappers in the late 70s and early 80s--so called,because as soon as prices dropped off---so did they.

The market for coon prices is going to be reasonably lower this year due to a surplus of furs. The only way for the market to go up drastically would be if Russia has a cold and harsh winter causing a demand for the coats. And even if this occurs it will not make the prices rise greatly but they will go up. The problem that comes up is if this does happen you cant expect the market to go up until about May of next year. My season ends in January and to think that the prices wont raise until about 4 months after season goes up is discouraging but not enough to stop trapping. You dont trap for the money I am going to let you in on a secret the days of trapping for money are pretty much over now. Unless there is a increase in the market for the furs the prices will never be close to what they were back in the day. The 50$ coon that my uncle got when he was younger are nothing but a dream that we chase but will not catch anymore. Does this mean you should stop trapping? No. I mean it is a little bit more income when you trap but you cant stop working if you have a family to provide for and trap. If it were that easy we all would do it. Like Bogmaster said you trap not for the price but for the love of trapping along with the love for other outdoors sports. Raccoons are predators that will reduce the population of other wildlife in a area if they are overpopulated which in turn affects all of your other outdoor sports. Well thats just my two cents :money:

I hear a lot about trapping just for the love of trapping not for the money. which sounds all good and well but have 2 questions about this:

(1) isn't that why so many of the legends trapped? I am completely ignorant of historical trapping Gods but did any of them trap just to trap? If so I would be interested in which ones... All of them that I do know about supported their families this way.

(2) my second question is what is wrong with trapping for money? I do it, I support my family doing it. what is it exactly that is wrong with me?

Please note I am not equating myself with any trapping legend, I do support my family trapping animals, even though I do mostly ADC work and do not sell a lot of furs. Am I less of a trapper because I make money from trapping not from selling furs?

Paul,not in the least.What meager income I make ,is derived from the trapping industry.
I would be further ahead if I did summertime adc work instead of doing trapping conventions.
It was easier making a living trapping when our well known trappers of yesterday did it.--fur trapping that is.
I have a hard time with those that call themselves trappers,when they refuse to trap--if it isn't big money.
Trapping in this day and age,is very difficult ,as far as being able to support a family on fur sales.
Control work is about the only way to make a decent living derived solely from trapping.

lets see....I sent all my coons to NAFA this year just to see how it compared to the state auction. The sold 50% in may---i averaged 11.00 for them. They sold some more in sep and i averaged 15.00 on them. now they still have 20% of my coons unsold--and they are the bigger selects...so they wont sell till next year.

Next year I may sell coons at the state auc....but will still sell everything else through NAFA.

The prices may go down a little....but at 11 bucks a piece ill take all i can get....

PLUS your average bear wont target coons this year...so if the russians have a normal winter and they buy up the coons the prices will go up!!
