Tapered 30-06 barrel won't shoot!
« on: October 18, 2005, 05:17:07 AM »
Have a 30-06 barrel tried different handloads for 165 gr bullets both in
hornady and sierra, tried max and min. loads in 4064 and 4350 have an
aftermarket 2 lb. trigger, leupold 3x9, leopold rings and base shooting off
sand bags. My 22-250 will cut one ragged hole, as well as my .50 cal.
Whats up? Any help would be appreciated.

I would try a few quality factory loads, the federal premium HE 180gr load shoots great out of my encore 24" sporter barrel.  You also might want to free float it if you haven't already, I use neopreme washers to float all of my encore barrels.   It has proven to make a very big difference to me.

Out of curiosity exactly how big are the groups?  The twist of the .30-06 Encore bbls (I found out) is actualy suited for the lighter bullets of 150gr.  Obviously there are guns that shoot heavy bullets well.  But if we are talking about mere inches perhaps trying some 150gr bullets may work for you.  But if we are talking MANY inches then I would go with the mentioned suggestion of using the neoprene washers.  Other than that I could only suggest checking the crown for burrs and checking your headspace.

You know I kind a suspected that It might like lighter bullets. The best group I got was 1 3/4 inches at 100 yds that was with 54 grs. of 4350,
kinda light for that cal.  The exact opposite was true with the 22-250
according to tc it preferred the slightly heavier bullets go figure. I live in
a very rural area and my choice of reloading components is very limited.
Other than ordering some the 165's were my only option. Thanks for the
info though I guess I will be ordering some.

Reading this got me to thinking.  When I first got my 30-06 tapered barrel for my Encore, I was working up loads for Moose and Big Bears.  I was using 180, 200, and 220 grain Noslers.  The Encore did not shoot worth a darn, I put it away and forgot it.  I deffinately had a bad attitude toward it.  Last week I bought a 4X12 scope and wanted to try it on something.  I put it on my Encore barrel, and grabbed some 165 grain loads I had worked up for my Handi 06.  After siting in the scope, I started shooting for group.  I am shooting a four inch group at 300 yards.  I'm happy!  Maybe it just won't shoot heavy bullets well, too bad.

I can confirm the same behavior. My 24" 30-06 barrel shoots very nicely with 150 gr bullets. Then I tried 180's (Nosler Partitions, Speer Grand Slams, and Nosler Accubonds) and it was terrible! I've compromised at 165's - that's as small as I want to go since I'm shooting at elk. I settled on the 165 Swift Sciroccos.
