Smaller frame size 1861 Colt Navy??? Seen one?
« on: November 04, 2005, 07:40:41 PM »
I picked up a 61 Navy Colt clone awhile back. I already had one Pietta '61  and wanted another. This one felt a little different, and when I got home realized why. The entire thing is slightly smaller in size than the Pietta. The kicker is the FAP in a diamond stamp under the barrel, which is a Pietta trademark I am told. The barrel is tapered and the parts will NOT interchange between the two guns. Not even cylinders or grip frames. Any one else seen one like this? I conversed with Allesandro (sp) Pietta via email, and he said that Pietta never made a smaller framed 61. Thanks. DM

I'm not sure whether or not Pietta ever made them but Uberti has copies of the 1862 Police. They have the 61 army features but with a shorter (5 shot)  cylinder and a 31 pocket model sized frame. The cylineders are fluetted and they could resemble a  fluetted 61 navy.  Some of the Uberti Pocket Police revolvers have a longer-than-4" barrel and at least some resemblance to the navy.

They also made a "Pocket Navy" that is the same size but with 51 navy features.

Nope. It has a 6 shot fluted cylinder and is not Uberti. It says on the side of the barrel, "Colt 1861 Navy". It is just a little smaller than my other Pietta, but definately not a pocket gun. DM

If you find out what's going on I sure would like to know. A few years back I tried everything to find a correct size .36 Remington and after allot of searching I found one that was made by Lyman years ago. The guy wanted more than I could afford at the time and now I wish I had bought it anyway. They were built to the old specks from what I understand.
The .36 Remington that pieta has out now is nothing more than the .44 frame with a shorter barrel.
It would be great to have a coerect sized .36 in one model or another.
