Ruger 96/17

I want a 17HMR and was wanting a lever. It is between a Henry and a Ruger. I do not like the setup for a scope on henrys though. It is a hoaky thing that mounts to the barrel and is canteleverd back over the reciver. I like the looks of the ruger but have heard that the triggers have a lot of creep and pull like a railroad switch.

Does anyone have any experiance with them? I posted a this question on the Ruger board but did not get any helpfull replys.

That is a darned good question.  There are gobs of trigger options for 10-22s and also for 77-22s.  But I have never seen anything for the lever guns.  I have a couple of 10/22s now. If I ever stumble on a 96 it will be a good project.

I suppose it isn't the subject for all the aftermarket stuff because there aren't as many out there.  But maybe some of the trigger parts available for the other guns interchange.  I bet someone here knows.

I've got a 96-17.  It has a two-stage trigger and breaks at like 5 or 6 pounds.  More than what my trigger pull gauge can measure.

Bubber:  I recently purchased a 96/22.  From my research, it is my understanding that Todd at ttshooter.com has performed some magic on Model 96 triggers:

Although he specializes with 10/22 models, I have read on the rimfire central forums that he will work on the 96 models and at least one member there was very pleased with his work on a model 96.  I plan on contacting him about a trigger job in the very near future.

bubber, I also have a ruger 96- 17 and a 96- 44. I don't know much about adjusting triggers but the 17 definately has the worst trigger on it of the two. oddly you'd think they would be about the same.  like you said no shortage of creep and the railroad switch thing pretty much sums it up. other than that its a handy little gun in need of a little trigger work.
