Yesterday I took my new Remington 700 Classic out to th range for the third time. THe first two trips were trouble free, the gun shot well and the scope was O.K. till the second trip when it became loose at the base. Being leupold bases and rings, I hadn't expected any trouble but it was a minor deal. I took it home and removed the base and put some blue loctite in the screwholes as my gunsmith had advised.
The third trip had me worried. athe gun would not fire a single round. The bullets chambered well and the hammer dropped but never struck the firing pin. I felt a slight sense of panic.
I noticed that the bolt was not closing all the way so I removed it from the receiver and ran a bristle into the chamber too clean any possible debris that might have lodged there to no avail.
I thought back to what I had done since the last trip when the gun itself performed flawlessly.
Upon removing the scope base again, I noticed that one of the screws was barely longer than the rest and of course I had put it in the front hole.
Needless to say, it belongs in the rear hole and putting it in the front will penetrate the receiver and block the bolt from closing...If they only had left me a note,,,,,
