Got a small black bear with my 500 Mag.
« on: October 20, 2005, 06:30:46 AM »
I well I just got back from Maine. I got a small black bear with my 500 Mag. The gun was a monster on it, one shot and it was over. We did not see many bear at all, it was raining hard and real windy the first couple of days. I got my bear on the 3rd morning, it was a 100 lb bear, but I am going to get a life size mount out of it. My buddy got a 140 lb bear later that day.  :D  :-D

Nice going Redhawk .... I see you live up to your statement. If your going to make a hole make a big one. <grin>  Bear has never been on my menu until this year. I'd heard so many people say they wouldn't eat it if they were starving I wouldn't shoot one if I had the chance. I was able to try some  this year and just like everything else if it's done right it's good if it's done wrong   the gulls won't eat it. I was talking to a buddy and from what he said yours should be real good eating. He went up north and got a 465 pounder and he gave away most of it.  Are you going to post a photo or two?

NE Hunter, I have to get my pic's developed and learn how to post here.

My buddy I hunted with got all my meat. He loves bear meat. He shot one last year and eat it all up quick. His whole family loves bear bear, so I thought I would just let him have mine. We are planning on going back and see if we can get a bigger one next time. Also shot a 5 point buck today in Marylands opening day for muzzleloader.  :D  :-D

Way to go pal.  I had a shot at a black bear last year, but missed.  He was about 150 yards away and I had to try a free hand shot.  Bear 1, Larry 0.

This year should be different.  They have spotted 5 good bears in my hunting area this summer.  Hope to make up for last year.  My buddy did get a small (106 lbs.) bear last year.

Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Thanks all.  :D  Bear hunting in Maine is not an easy chore at all. I found out how out of shape I was. Up and down them hills nearly killed me. :-D

One bear is better than none! I went hunting bear in Maine three years ago got none. We hunted over bait. I'm very comfortable in the woods so the guide left me off 1.3 miles from the stand and I walked the rest of the way on a snowmobile trail. I stayed on the stand until dark then walked the same 1.3 miles out and he picked me up. The third night I was walking out and heard something in front of me. I kept on walking until I couldn't stand it. I took off my pack, got out my flashlight and looked to see what it was. About thirty yards in front of me were two eyes about eight feet off the ground. Mooooooooooooose. I started talking to it. You know stuff like get out of my way and stuff like that but it wouldn't move. Then I realized it was probably the light so I shut it off for a few and then checked again. Wheeewwww it was gone. I met it every night until I left. One night I thought it had a calf with it. Got my heart a pumpin but the calf was only a only a bush. Hahahahaha. I really loved hunting there but I'm spending so much money on guns I haven't had the money to go there these last couple of years. I will return though.
I've only had bear meat once and I liked it but a friend has had it a few times (his bear) once it sucked the other times it was great.
Congratulations on the bear!

Congrats on the bear. What load were you using. I have a 500 and about the first thing I learned was that I was going to have to handload for it to be able to afford to shoot it.

Bim :D  What part of WV you from. godd to see another hillbilly on here.

I used a 370 gr. hard cast gas check bullet with 43.0 gr. of Lil-Gun powder. The bear only went about 5 feet after it hit the ground.  :-D

Congradulations, I'm glad to here you got a black bear. I passed up one that weighted 120lb when I went hunting in Canada for black bear.  Another guy shot the one I passed up. But a black bear is a black bear. :D

I learned the same with my desire to shoot the .500.  It makes it even to cast your own bullets.  Some like it, some think it's too much work.  I've been casting my own 525 grain bullets and I like them.  The animals love them too.  Personally, I've really liked 4227 or #9.
