Does anyone have a 416 Rigby barrel for their Encore?  If so I would like to know how it shoots.  I'm considering one for my Encore for Grizzlies, and Moose.  Right now I'm shooting a TCR with a .338 Win Mag barrel.  I like it just fine, but am looking for something a little heavier for the big bears.

Guns and Ammo TV recently had a little blurb on the Encore .416.  Craig Boddington got to shoot it.  Not sure of yardage it was at, and wether TV "fudging" was involved, but it shot some decent groups (what I could tell in the 1 1/2" to 2" range.)  Plenty potent for up close and personal bears  :grin: .

The link old4X4 posted has a lot of information. But I can tell you from first hand experience, I love the 416 Rigby on my Encore. I took a Water buffalo at 135 yards with a single shot with a 300 gr. Barnes X bullet. I have the gun sighted in at 1 inch high at 100 yards and it is topped with a Leupold VXII 1X4X20mm scope. I also installed a simms pad and a mercury recoil reducer in the stock. I had to drill the stock to install the mercury recoil reducer. I love the 416 Rigby round so much that I just bought a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 416 Rigby. I want the option of a single shot or a bolt action.

The only draw back is the price of ammo. If you reload it is not so bad, but factory rounds are about $120.00 for 20 rounds. I bought 50 Norma cases from Cabalas for $94.00 and Barnes 300 gr. X bullets. Once I got it sighted in, I bought 20 more cases to reload.  I went to Cabalas the other day and got another 50 cases because I want to work up a load for the  CZ 550 Safari Magnum. I am hoping the loads I have for the Encore will be as accurate in the CZ, but if not I will have the cases to work with.

You won't regret getting the 416 Rigby barrel, I know I don't.  :D  :-D
Also Cabalas is the only one carrying the 416 Rigby barrel, it is a Cabalas exclusive. Let us know if you get it and how it performs for you. If you want any other info, let me know and I will see if I can help.

Mine shoots touching holes at 100 yards with 300 gr Barnes X @ 2200 fps.  This delivers over 3000 ft. lbs. of energy.  Brass and bullets are cheap.  You can find Hornady loaded ammo or brass most every where.  Your bullet is a .411 diameter which are produced by Hornady, Woodleigh, Northfork & Barnes.  You can download it and shoot cast bullets too.

I shot a black bear in June with it and the bear dropped in its tracks after traversing 3/4 of his body and exited out the front shoulder.  Cabelas have them in stainless too.

I also have Encore barrels in 300 & 375 H&H.  The 375 H & H would give you the horspower you are looking for and a flatter trajectory for longer shots.  

Lots of options, that's what makes the Encore so sweet.


You can duplicate the 405 WCF  with a 45-70 reload. I would just get the 416 Rigby. Reloading is the way to go with the 416 Rigby. Cases are $94.00 from Cabalas for 50 of them and there are a lot of bullet choices. Factory Norma ammo is very expensive, about $125.00 for 20 rounds. But like I said reloading is the way to go. If the 416 Rigby is what you want don't settle for anything else.  :D

And lest you gawk at the price of Rigby cases keep in mind it was designed for pretty low pressures and you SHOULD get some decent case life out of them (and if you want even more try annealing them after each use.)
