Propane or Dual Fuel for Camp Stoves & Lanterns?
« on: June 16, 2007, 09:51:22 AM »
I am starting to buy some camping gear and would appreciate recommendations, pros / cons of propane versus dual fuel type lanterns and camp stoves.

I have a couple of Dual Fuel lantern's and if I was out to buy a new gas stove I would purchase a Dual Fuel stove.

I have never burn any fuel in my lanterns other then Coleman or Brand X stove and lantern fuel but I have that option in case of emergency.  As I recall Coleman list a few caveats regarding the use of pump gas in Dual Fuel appliances.  Having lost power for weeks because of winter storms I like the option.

I just picked up a coleman dual-fuel stove at a yard sale for $5.00.  I bought a pump rebuild kit, but didn't need it.  I disassembled the whole thing, oiled the heck out of it and pumped it up.  I get pressure at the tank outlet, just haven't fueled it p and lit it yet.  A good bargain, seeing that a brand new one will go $70 or so.  I may pick up a propane adaptor kit for the ultimate versatility.

I have had the Colman dual fuel lantern for years and it works great.  They are louder than a basic karosine lamb but far outshine them.  I have always used white gas but am glad I have the option of dual fuel.  Last year I bought a Colman dual fuel 2 burner stove.  I did alot of research.  Some folks said they had problems with theirs but I set mine up, added white gas, pumped a little bit, and it lit right up!    Very happy with both purchases

I went a different direction than the guys above. I have all propane equipment. I hate dealing with the liquid fuel for one. I bought a connector the use a bulk propane bulk which really helps save money. I was about to switch back to white gas for my lighting because I thought they threw more light but when I went to the new Coleman Outlet they just put in near my house I found out that I was wrong and that they just came out with a new propane light that put out more wattage than anything they offered before. Each type has it's own benefits but I prefer propane.

For my "tent" hunting camp I use a combination of propane and white gas appliances.  I prefer white gas appliances at high altitude because I believe they perform better in cold weather. I think I agree major257 is correct when it comes to safety.  There are more opportunities for problems when dealing with white gas appliances.

I like the battery powered Coleman lanterns for use in my tent.  I suspect the flash point of the tent material is just short of the flash point off white gas.

Siskiyou, I have found that when you are cold you tend to make more mistakes. Mistakes like filling you lantern with fuel inside your tent or shelter to stay out of the wind, or spilling fuel on your hands or clothes because you are shivering can be life changing events. Now you are cold and on fire too, sort of an odd combination. Don't get me wrong I have had 1lb propane cylinders freeze up and run LP all over and catch fire everything has it's + & - during extreme cold temps. Like I said I use mostly bulk propane usually a 5lb or 10lb cylinder and have had no problems with propane freeze ups, but I usually don't ice fish if it is below neg 20 degs f. Back packing is different lighter is better no questions asked. Good luck with your selection Racer, if I learned one thing over the years you won't be sorry you bought quality I have sure wasted enough money on many a lantern that never made it home after it's first use because it was junk when I bought it and thought I was getting a deal.

I'm a land surveyor.  I work outside.  I bought a Coleman model 533 single-burner dual fuel stove in 1997.  Every year, starting in October, and running through March (5-6 days a weeks), I pack a can of soup/chili/ramen or other stove-cooked similar item.  I've replaced the pump once, and still use it to prepare my lunches. -Often my workmates' lunches as well.

My observation of the gas/white gas is that the gasoline with the city additives (I was getting gas in Milwaukee then) burned extremely clean.  All my pans were clean, the burner was clean, the flame was blue from the diffuser to the tip of the flame.  Other gasolines burned blue with lots of yellow and sooted the burner and the pan.  I've tried all the octanes and Ethanol/non-E.
My first choice for fuel to burn would be the city blend that was used in Milwaukee in 1997-98, but I think that is no longer made, as it polluted groundwater (MBTE additive).  My second choice (and what I use now) is the Coleman White Gas.  The pans are a bit sooty, but it cleans off fairly well.  The burner element and bracketry that the pan rests on have a thin layer of soot, but this doesn't seem to be cumulative.

I debated on propane/gas stove and found that I could fill my gas stove when I was topping off the work truck.  The stove only used about 5 cents or less a week (gas was $1.60 or so) so I didn't feel a need to reimburse the company.. ;D

That said, I've never used a propane portable device, so someone else may have better input on that.
Just my Awf Hand comments...

Propane is more convenient, but it doesn't work in the cold. And it doesn't have to be that cold for a disposable cylinder to frost up and lose pressure. As long as your camping is mild weather, you'll love propane. The coleman white gas stove and lanterns will work untill the pump cup is too cold to pump up the pressure.

But the most reliable, bullet-proof stove I use is Alcohol - but that is another thread.

That is very much the truth.  It does not work at all when its cold....  I mean... where I live... cold is pretty cold.. but in those circumstances.. any gasious fuel will not burn, hell, even diesel will not burn by itself.

White gas is the way to go when its cold out... or alcohol, but alcohol and the corresponding stoves are less available.  (I know, all you need is a pop can if you know what you are doing, I'm talking about store products)
