38-55 conversion
« on: November 02, 2005, 03:34:27 PM »
I shoot strickly BP.  I just purchased a second rifle in 38-55 and now wonder if it is possible to create a longer shooting H&R Target Classic.
Does anyone know if the 38-55 Target Classic can be "streached out" to 38-72?????
Also what is the rate of twist in the factory 38-55.  I am wondering if this rifle in semi stock condition can digest a 330 grn. round with factrory twist? :?
My questions stem from a thought to build a long range "Classic" to compete with the typical rounds such as the now favorite 40-65 and of course the 45-70, 45-90 and the big MAMA 45-110's.....while having the luxury of low recoil of the 38 cal round in a 72 gr. BPCR.  Please advise.  Thank you

Or the real big mama, the 45-120-3ΒΌ" Sharps Straight! I stretched a 45-70 BC to 45-120 and a 38-55 Target to 405 Winchester.....From what little I've read, there's not much to be gained with the 38-72 over the 38-55 unless you are shooting black powder as it is with the 45-xxx family.

and a 38-55 Target to 405 Winchester.....

Quickdtoo,

Was the 405 conversion a stub job or a rebore? And, if the latter, who did the work and are you happy with it?

Sincerely,
Docbones

It's a rebore/rechamber done  by Wayne York of Oregon Gunsmithing. He uses 6 groove cut rifling and does an exellent job. He's done work for several of us, Mac and I had .25-06 barrels rebored to .338-06 and Marv has a barrel being done too. His bores shoot with the best of em, just ask Mac how his 338-06 shoots....

This target shows the 10th thru 14th shot thru the bore. I adjusted POI after the lower first 3 shots. Don't remember what the 3 little holes are, probably the .22-250
