new omega breech plug...advantage?
« on: November 24, 2005, 04:23:34 PM »
i bought a t/c omega rifle from cabelas 3 years ago when they were fairly new...and mine has a breech plug that is hallow or dished out on the side facing the powder inside the barrel...i recently just picked up a omega rifle for a friend of mine and it seems that the newer omegas have a more flat breech plug facing the powder with just a slight slant on it, where as mine is deep and hollow...is there an advantage to the new design?  should i buy one of the new design and replace my old one(which isn;t a problem they are cheap)...i use 100gr of 777 pellets...thanks for any thoughts or help

Yes you should buy a new one and send the old one directly to me for correct disposition.

OTOH: I would not get worried about the change likely it helps lower their cost of manufacture..

does it shoot well for you or are you just wanting a reason(excuse) to buy a new one? Many laughs.

If you are real concerned I would contact TC and ask about the change.

The dished out design sounds like it was ment to be used with a loose powder charge.

T/C has at least 3 different breech plugs for the Encore/Omega. One was designed to cut down on the crud ring from shooting 777 loose powder.

well it shoots good...but i always wondered if the powder pellets would fall into the concave part once in a while if they maybe cracked or crushed during loading (which i havn't had a problem with yet)...i don;t know i guess i just wanted an excuse to get a new one

Unless T/C has designed a fourth plug, the deep dished one was the latest and greatest for 777 loose anyways.

i use the 777 pellets though...thats why when i seen the breech plug from the newer one and it was almost flat it looked like a better option for pellets

Also, the new/new Omegas have the cheaper sights on them, I imagine yours has the click adjustable sights? Their the good ones, the new ones are the Williams Fire Sights, while nice, not as nice as the click adjustable ones. Jack.

I have the TC Encore which takes the same breechplug as the Omega. The deep dish design plug is for loose powder and the flatter plug is for pellets, as stated to prevent crushing them.

I now shoot loose triple 7 and called TC and they swapped out my flat plug for the deep dished one.  Only costs was for shipping.

I was trying to get away from the blow back into the Encore breech area, but didn't see any difference in the two plug designs.  The new Remington Kleenbore 209's have solved that problem so far.

There are actually three plugs. I have all three. The one that came with my Omega which is about three years old was almost flat with a slight concave face less than 1/16 inch deep. The second one is a concave one which has about 3/16 inch deep concave but has a ring around the outside of the convave section which is about 1/8 inch across (this apparently was to give a flat section for pellets to sit on without falling into the concave section. The third one is fully concave and has no flat section on the face (personally I would not use this one with pellets (although I don't use pellets anyway). I bought all three to try to get rid of the 777 crud ring. None of these fixed the problem in my rifle. The .25ACP conversion did the most to fix the problem but not completely. Finally I stopped using 777 and the crud ring problem went away. Black Mag'3 works great for me.
