Advice on powder and bullet carriers
« on: October 21, 2005, 10:09:26 AM »
I bought a new Hunstman .50ML/.243 combo last year.  Both barrels work great.  Didn't get a deer (or see one) during ML season here in MO but the gun shoots very nice.  This is my first effort with a ML.  Carrying .243 cartridges is simple enough but the smoke pole supplies are taking a bit to get used to.  Can't find any ML users at my rifle club who don't use pellets so I need to call on this forum for advice.

I'm using No-Excuses 460gr with about 70-75 gr of loose pyrodex and shooting nice groups so I don't want to go with pellets and sabots.  My problem is, how do hunters who use loose powder and conicals with wads carry spares for a second shot?

I have a couple of those speed loader tubes but the tube is large enough that the loose powder would coat the pre-lubed bullet and make it impossible to load it in the field.  The wonder-lube felt wads aren't big enough to separate the powder from the bullet either.

Am I faced with carrying a small flask, a small baggie of wads and bullets?  Need some advice.  I'm at a loss for what to use.  At the range who cares, I can just carry all my stuff in the range bag.

Any advice is appreciated.
Always need another gun.

It sounds as if you may have ther incorrect size speedloaders. You probably have .54 caliber instead of .50. Another alternative and one I use is to carry premeasured amounts of powder in old fashioned 35mm film containers, just pop the top, bend the plastic container into it's own funnel and pour the powder into the bore. It works slick....<><....

MSP REt,
Thats what I use to do way back in the day before the fancy speed loaders.  But now that I'm shooting the NO EXCUASES bullet I may give them a try again.  Because even using a 50 cal speed loader I do notice alot of powder sticking to the shoulder of the bullet when I seat it in the barrel.

Thanks for the tip.

I have some speed loaders that have 2 seperate compartments one I use for powder and the other for bullet. Great for conicals but not patched rb's.

Thompson Center has carriers or speedloaders that have two compartments. They come in 45 cal., 50 cal. and 54 cal. They work great :D

ok this is easy,,,,,,,go to walmart and get a shotgun shell houlder that fits thestock........put pre measured powder in tubes that fit snug in slhell holders.....the felt wads will fit at one end of the shellhoulder <between the stck and  shell houlder........the extra primer carries under the other........then a small zipper bag to carry my bullets.      the ziper bag is from the bank they give them away to carry change in.....if you can find one they sell these shell holders with flip type pockets,,,i have one but cant find any more.... that holds my bullets....i use these on all my ft stuffers.........so i dont have to carry noting but my gun.....jb
