How many of you have centerfire scopes on your rimfire?

I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 mounted on my .22 mag using a BKL unitized mount (which by the way is an impressive piece of work). The scope itself is fine for the money - bright and trouble free. Accuracy of my rig is so-so. Maybe 3" groups at 100 yards under average conditions.

Magazine articles I read lately are divided. Some say more and more shooters are mounting centerfire scopes on their rimfires. They say there is no reason not to. Others still get into the parallax discussion and say a dedicated rimfire scope is necessary to get the most out of your rifle.

What are your opinions and experiences? I use my gun for plinkling and small game hunting mostly between 25 - 100 yards. It seems to me that for rimfire scopes there is not much middle ground. There are the cheap <$50.00 scopes and the $ 200.00 plus scopes. That is what attracted me to look at centerfire scopes on my .22 mag.

I have a Simmons 8 Point 3x9 scope on my 17 HMR Savage and on my two Remington 22's I have Bushnell Banners 4X's. I haven't found any problems using these centerfire scopes...

I have 'centerfire' scopes on all my rimfires, 22 & 22 mag, so do my kids, and there are no problems with them, they work just fine for us.

ZANARDI:  I have nothing but centerfire scopes on my rimfires (mainly older Redfields) so far and have had no problems using them.  

I would like to mention, however,  that there are a couple of moderately priced rimfire scopes available that have excellent reputations:

Nikon Prostaff 4X32
Weaver Rimfire 4X28  and 2.5-7X32

They are all priced between $80 and $125 dollars, have parallax set at 50 yards, and are well thought off.  I am seriously considering a Weaver 4X for my new Ruger 96/22, as it is a small, light-weight scope that will go nicely with the compact Ruger.

Actually they are NOT centerfire scopes, just scopes that have 1” or 30mm tubes that focus down under 50 yards.  Most big game rifle scopes stop focusing at the 50 yard mark.  Many .22 rimfire scopes focus down to 10 yards and less.  Many of these are also rated for springer air rifle use.  All my rimfires(7 of them) wear 1” or 30 mm tube scopes(3-12x or higher) designed for dual purpose use - rimfire and air rifle.  Lawdog

I just bought a 10-22 from a guy who couldn't hit anything with it.  He had high peek through rings and a "centerfire" scope mounted on it.  To see clearly in the scope his cheek had to be off the stock.  At rimfire ranges the paralax problem took him out of the running.

I mount scopes so that the shooter's eye is centered in the tube when the gun is mounted correctly.  That way the gun and scope are in the same place each shot.  With one of the big end bell scopes sometimes the cheekpiece has to be built up to make things work.  But for the most part getting away from those peek thru thingies does the trick.  Paralax isn't a problem if the scope is close to the same place each shot.

Hey there rimfire shooters,

Well, IMHO some centerfire scopes can be a big problem.  Now I don't know if this has to do with price/quality or just the scope I tried.

However, I bought a used 77/22 which had a cheaper Bushnell mounted on it and YES, PARALAX WAS A BIG PROBLEM.

I set the rifle up on the kitchen table and sighted at an object probably 50 - 60 yds. distant.  With the Bushnell, ANY head movement or change of position caused the crosshairs to move.

I changed to a 2x7 Leupold - centerfire scope - and no more problem as far as my eyes could see. I mounted a 2x7 compact Leupold on the same rifle at a later date and again no problem.

My current Clark Custom 77/22 wears a 3x9 EFR Leupold.

I put a bsa sweet seventeen on my 541S rem it is perallex adjustable from10yds to infinity. I know it is actually suppose to go on 17hmr but it works for me. No more perelex problems. It is not that exspensive and is clear and sharp.

Any scope with adjustable objective will cure paralax problems, as long as you adjust the objective lens.  If you don't have AO on a center fire scope and it is set like most to be paralax corrected at 100 yards you have to have a perfect cheek weld each time you mount the gun to be able to hit with it.  That requires a good gun fit and a good scope mount, not one you have to take your cheek off the gun to center the cross hairs.

I have a Leupold M8 4x on my Henry 22 mag and it works fine.

Four .22  rifles all with CF scopes. Three 3X12, one 4X16 all with adj. objectives to eliminate the short range paralax problems. When hunting 3X or 4X is fine, and I have the 12-14X for target shooting. Two are Tasco's made in Japan, two are Bushnell Trophy's. The Tasco's made in Japan were good scopes for the money. Once they went to Korea, then China the quality went in the dumper. I haven't seen any of them since Bushnell bought them out, so I don't know if they're any good or not. I've had good luck with the Bushnell's from the 4200's to the Bannars. I've got six of these and had zero problems with them.

All of mine that are scoped have centerfire scopes except one has a Leopold 2x7 rimfire scope.  Haven't had any problem with Weaver, Burris, Redfield and a Buschnell on any other of the rifles.  Oh yeah one has a red dot too.
