Would a camera tri-pod work for sighting in my Tracker? The cheapest and easiest place to go for sighting in my Tracker is the pasture behind my nephew's barn. Since I don't have a bench rest, I was wondering if a tri-pod with a thick rug or folded towel over top would work? Anyone ever tryed this...problems, advantages, comments. Trying to sight in with Off Hand shooting is really hard to do. I was able to get on paper, but that was about it. Just wondering if this would work!

yes it would, someone makes an platform that sits on the tripod. I have seen people use a 5 foot ladder as well.

Cookieman, anything that helps to hold the sight picture steady will help, the steadier the better, wiggily is no good. Try the home made shooting sticks in the link below, I made some for Coyote hunting and they should work just as well at the range, also you can make them any length/height you want, if long enough they also serve as a walking staff....<><.... :grin:

The biggest problem with it is that it provides only a single point of support. The rear of the rifle has only YOU to steady it. Humans are not very steady critters. You'll find that the crosshairs will be doing up and down and left to right motions if you have only one point of support. Not the best for target work or sighting in. Better than nothing but not the best.

Why not take a mat of some sort and lay down to shoot? Then use whatever you're gonna use over the tripod to rest the front of rifle on and you can use one hand on the ground under the butt. This is nearly as steady as the best bench.

Thanks, Bill. Basically, that is what the link in Andy's post was saying. It gives plans for a Bi-Pod and the guy sits on the ground and uses both knees to support his arms and the Bi-pod for the gun barrel. I never thought of using the sit or prone positions. Good advice, thanks.

Bill beat me to the punch. I was going to suggest some sort of prone supported firing position. I don't have a bench. A lot of times it is the very redneck but still efective laying across the hood or roof of the pickup method(depending on which truck I'm driving)

Some one here gave me a great idea.The ol IRONING BOARD.I think it's great,about 5 bucks at the Salvation Army or free at your mom's.It's adjustable and folds for travel.

You might be a redneck if...

You kneel down along side a 4 wheeler and use it's seat as a shooting bench.
