Model 12 or Law Enforcement ?
« on: November 05, 2005, 09:48:25 AM »
I'm still in the air about buying a target rifle, and in the caliber I want. I am leaning towards 308 now and have been looking hard at both of these models, the Model 12 and the Law Enforcement. In the blue version of both these:
http://www.savagearms.com/12fv.htm
and
http://www.savagearms.com/10fple2.htm
is there any differance?
All I see is the extra swivel stud and a little higher price tag for the Law Enforcement model.
Later on down the road I would be replacing the stock with a Choate, but for a little while would be willing to deal with the factory synthetic...in which I hate Savages synthetic.
Would it be worth going with the Stainless Fluted model 12 instead of the blued version? Or should a man pick the Law Enforcement instead?
Need some suggestions

I can tell you that the LE rifles have a larger bolt handle

I thought that the Model 12 and the Law Enforcement models both have the same enlarged bolt handle?

mine is in 308, I have only shot it out to 100 yards, this is the only public range close to me.
I am using off the shelf bulk Remington PSCL 165 gr bullets. at 100 yards I used a playing card as a target 5 shots where in the center of the card.

It has a Bushnell 3200 elite 5-15 scope Leupold one piece mount and Leupold med. rings. The brass I am using is once fired L.C match brass and RCBS dies. I have done nothing special in ways or load work, this is the first load I have tried. I think I can do a lot better if I use better bullets and work on the loads. I have just finished breaking in the barrel PER Savage's instructions on the web page.
when you get a mount make sure it is for the NEW accutrigger.

What barrel length is your 308 rickyp?
I see that Savage offers the Law Enforcement model in 20", 24", and 26"

My 12FV came with the oversized bolt handle.  The only real difference from the FPLE2 is the extra swivel stud for a bipod, and the different calibers available in the 12.

I wouldn't pay extra just for the extra swivel stud - if you're going to put a bipod on it you'll want to change the stock anyways as the factory stock twists too much for bipod use IMO.  Mine now wears a Duramaxx and it's a vast improvement.

I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.  It's a very accurate rifle.

That's the only difference I could find with both, was the extra Stud. I thought about just going for the Model 12 FV and then just buying a Choate Varmint stock or Sniper stock for it. Would save me a little $.
What loads perform well in yours? Handloads and Factory?

I only use handloads, I am using  once fired L.C. match brass and Remington bulk 165 gr.
I think it wukk shgoot better with match grade bullets and not the $35 for 500

I have a Model 10FP in .223. I get a jagged hole about the size of my pinky nail at 100 yards. I love this rifle and the Accu-Trigger.... Just bought a .30-06 with the Accu trigger also......

The finish on the LE is black oxide including the bolt whereas the FV is "blued" and the bolt is SS with laser etched Savage logo.

The 3rd swivel stud allows for a competition type chin sling and a hand stop.
