JJ,

Or anyone else, We know your stand on the .375 H&H and it's well justified.  BUT have you looked at the .400 H&H?  Any opinions on this offering from the good folks Holland & Holland?  Lawdog

LD,
Bullet selection for .411" bullets is pretty slim.  Aside from the North Fork 360 grain and Woodleigh's 400 grain, there really isn't too many that will allow this cartridge to reach its potential.  Barnes does have a 300 grain X, but I'm not sure if they'll continue with it.  North Fork also offers a 300 grain, I believe.  If you like Hawk bullets, they do have a wide selection to choose from.

My take on this one is to compare it to the 416's, which I believe it more closely aligns itself.  The 416 Remington, which is the 375 H&H necked up to 416 is a very close running comparative.  The 416's just have a much better selection of bullets and equal or better ballistics.  If you want nostalgia, the 416 Rigby or 404 Jeff are more than the new H&H's equal.

Sent you a PM on this one.

I'm way to conservative and serious about my hunting. I want a gun that will have available ammo where ever I'm at. I can just about guarantee you that you will find 375HH ammo under a boat cushion in SE Alsaka on most skiffs, on the dash board of most pickups in Alaska or under a seat. Heck you will likely see empties while walking bear trails in the bush.

The same can be said in Africa. Most camps, and PHs will have a 375HH with plenty of ammo around the place. in the landy or in a drawer in the lodge It's as common as 30/06 ammo for goodness sakes!  Try finding 416's or 400's or 300 win mag or just about anything else and you will struggle. When folks are in areas with true big game hunting especially Alaska and international hunting the 375HH is the rifle of choice. I doubt that will change in my lifetime.

The 416 made a good run here but has petered out now. The introduction of too many different 416 cartridges screwed that up. If only the Remington 416 was introduced and all the gun makers chambered for it there might have been a good chance to over take the 375HH. However the roots are so deep and the success so good that it will not likely be knocked off it's pedistal in our life time!

JJ makes a great point.  My luggage was lost going to and returning from Zim (nothing to do with SAA or Delta, everything to do with Alaska Airlines).  If my rifles had made it, I still wouldn't have had any ammo for my 300 H&H or 338 Win Mag that I took.  I could have purchased or borrowed 375 H&H from a variety of sources.

My PH was scrambling trying to stay supplied with 416 Rem Mag ammo for his rifle (M70 in 416 RM).  308 Win, 375 H&H, and 458 still seemed to be in good supply, even in Zim.

I have a 300 WBY and will be going to Namibia for plains animals. Would the 375 HH be as good as the 300 there? How does the recoilcompare between the Tw?

I'd say you're better off with the .300 Weatherby for the plains game. Plenty of juice and flatter shooting than the .375 H&H, in case you have to cover any distances... and I'm saying that as someone who loves both of these cartridges. I understand the .300 H&H is making somewhat of a comeback and in a pinch you can always fire those rounds out of your Weatherby.

Texgun,
Unless you are going to hunt in areas where there are big buffalo and elephants, I think your 300 Wby would be great.  I know if I go back to Zim, I'll carry a 375 for plainsgame, just too many run-ins with cape buffalo, elephants and such.
