Live ammo shipping
« on: March 05, 2003, 05:34:24 AM »
Guys, I know this has been discussed several times before...one more time for the CRS in me. I have about 150 rounds of live 7-30 waters ammo that I would like to sell. Just not sure if I can ship it legally or not. I have had ammo shipped to me from suppliers. Do they have a special permit? Thanks

The following information comes from an individual at the UPS Hazmat Support Center. It provides the information you need for shipping ammunition.

Here are the regulations for shipping cartridges.  If you can classify your
material as ORM-D, you will have to mark you box in a special way, and we
can assist you in that process.

Read these regulations well.  If you meet the definition of ORM-D then call
me back and I can assist you in labeling your box.  If you do not meet the
definition, then you will have to ship it as a hazardous material.
IMPORTANT: You as the shipper are responsible for classifying the material
you are shipping.  It is advisable to first contact the manufacturer of the
material to determine how it is classed by the D.O.T.

Scott

Flash,
What I am posting is the information from UPS concerning how ammuntion is shipped. In order to purchase ammunition the Federal regulations require that the seller gets proof of age and a statement from the purchaser that no laws prevent the sale of the ammuntion in the area in which the purchaser resides. These are the Federal regulations in place that cover sales through catalogs or over the internet.
I have no idea how a 14 year old entered into the picture.

sjc1, I guess the subject is all to fresh in my memory but being an Ebay user, I see it all the time. I should have addressed the subject directly with Moe and not made the query with you. I am refering to the flood of auctioneers that think that because they receive ammo by land carrier, they can mail it Priority. and to whom ever they choose. I have heard stories of auction purchases when the seller ships Priority and includes the left over ammo for a perk. Without having the proper proof of age and local laws which might prohibit the shipment, there are many laws that could be broken.

Live ammunition cannot be shipped through U.S.P.S. Priority Mail. The ammunition has to be shipped using a common carrier, ie: UPS, Federal Express or such.
Flash, you are aware of the problems involved with ammunition and shipping. A lot of individuals think that they can just ship it to anyone they please but they cannot. For a complete text of this one can go to:
http://www.atf.treas.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/complete.htm
This is off of the ATF site and covers who can receive ammunition. It is rather long, as most Federal Regulations are, but if someone is interested it has the information they may need.
I think I am with you on this Flash, I would rather have the ammunition sit in my closet rather than sell it over the internet to someone I do not know and cannot see. It just is not worth it to me.

Actually, the laws on the ATF site could stipulate that "Mother May I?" must be said and I wouldn't care. As you, I ask, "Is it worth it"? And not "How can I"? After the Sept. 11th attack, the Federal Government would run me up the flag pole on the White House lawn if I shipped ammo via air freight. And to have "Little Johnny" in Small Town USA buy the stuff?? Yep, my grandchildren can shoot the stuff in their back yard after they spend their inheritance.

Flash,
I like your last post!
I think "Mother May I?" may be contained within that Federal Regulation but I do not have the resolve to try and find it.
Flag pole........White House lawn....individual that sold ammunition over the internet to an unknown individual! :)
