Have /would you use Tubbs final finish bore bullets ?
« on: October 29, 2005, 04:08:15 PM »
I was considering using Tubbs Final Finish bore package for my 30-06 T/C Custom shop barrel 15 " stainless.  It has pretty good tool marks in the bore.  It was not Lapped by the Custom shop.  I wanted to use the 5 stage bullet kit to polish the bore, but then I read the Mike Bellm article about how destructive these can be to the throat of the barrel.  Tubbs claims less than .0003 '' of material will be removed after the whole application of 50 bullets.
Have any of you done this "fire lapping" with his product and what do you experts think of this process as it relates to throat and barrel wear?

Thanks.

I have used this product in several match rifle barrels. It does what David says it will do. It may not alter accuracy, but will make the barrel foul less. Use it as directed. You can get the same results with hand lapping, it is just more work. You generally lose a .001 to .003 of throat using his product in the form you are proposing.

Good luck.

There are several barrel makers that the use of such products will instantly void any warranty.

firelap

I only firelap in older milsurps that have throat decay, and frosty bores. When I do firelap, I use this product as I think it is more conservative and predictable. I do this when the bore is not already oversized to facilitate quicker cleaning / less copper fouling.

David Tubbs is more likely to replace barrels very often which I am not.
