30 Herret Carbine opinions
« on: February 26, 2003, 02:14:29 PM »
I am considering a 30 Herret carbine barrel and want opinions.  I already have a 10" contender barrel & like the cartridge very much.  Twofold purpose for this: 1. for my 12 year old son - to use as a deer rifle; low recoil, we hunt in the woods so shots are usually less than 100 yds. (will mount a 1.5-5 scope on it) ; 2. as a tree stand gun, light to carry, easy to move with.  I reload so ammo is not a problem.  Am I missing anything here or making a major blunder?  I know there may be more efficient or powerful cartridges but I kind of hate to set up for another caliber unless there is a compelling reason.  I's most likely have Fox Ridge do the barrel, @ 19" long, SS and reglar taper. (will go on a SS frame) Thanks, in advance, for your opinions.

You're gonna love it.
Considering that the 30 Herret was designed to be efficient in a 10" barrel, I'd go for a 16 1/4" bull barrel for the carbine. Will balance better and be more compact. I have a Choate folding stock with an additional cheek pad added on mine. Works really great. Folds up to pistol size and is easily slung over the shoulder for carrying, which is nice if you're carring a portable tree stand with you also.
For the carbine length barrels I like the Bullberry hanger bar system for accuracy also.
Good luck & go for it.

Redwood,
Do a little research and you will find that the 357 Herret was developed to hunt deer when it was decided (by the developers of the 30 Herret) that the 30 was too small. The 357 Herret was lengthened to provide for more powder space and the diameter increased to make better use of the extra powder. The 30 Herret is not a viable deer cartridge and certainly not a humane cartridge for that purpose.

just one mans opinion,

Paul,  I know a whole lotta dead dear that would tend to disaggree w/ you.  I've had both Herrets for a long time, and I would agree the .357 is considerably more powerful than the .30, however I've found the 10" .30 Herret to be quite adequite for deer.  Now to the original question, the carbine....the advantage of the .30 Herret over the 30-30Win is only in 10" barrels.  In carbine length, the 30-30 would be the "better" choice.  I still think it would be fun though, and for stated purpose would work very well.   GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt   :)    :)    :)

The 357 Herrett and Great round also was developed for LARGER game than deer. It is capable of Elk within its range limit BUT!! The 30 Herrett make a wonderful 150 yard deer gun in a 10" barrel.
it is accurate and very deadly on deer for which it was designed for.
It gives you 30-30 balistics in a much smaller package and less recoil and Less powder.
And who is too argue about the 30-30 as a deer killer?
Use the 110 round nose ot the 125gr Flat point and even the ssp bullet from sierra.
WONDERFUL deer round
Redwood you are Right on track! Get your Kid the 30 Herrett and if you like a custom barrel throated for the lighter bullets.

Hopalong and Thomas,
I looked again at the article that I have and you are absolutely right. The larger cartridge was developed for Elk and larger game.
I hate when my "part timer's" disease does that to me.

The .30 Herrett is a poor choice for a new carbine barrel. You may reload but forming the cases is a PIA when you can get .30/30 cases for nearly free and even factory ammo is available and economical. Yes you may kill a deer with a .30 Herrett pistol but that does not prove the .30 Herret is a superior choice over a 30/30 in a carbine barrel. Stretch the range on the 30 Herrett and you are working with the terminal ballistics of a .30 Carbine or 32/20.

2 points to make here. First to form 30 Herrett is EASY. just run the 30-30 case into the die and trim....Done except for the first shot fireforms it. But! you may purchase READY formed brass from EA Brown a Advertiser here and also from Paul Dustin a froum member here.
Although the 30-30 does have factory ammo avalible teaching his SON how to reload is a SKILL and BONDING experience with his Son.
And if they wish to you may purchase the 30 Herrett from a online source.
Second point. I have BOTH a 10" tube and a 20" tube in the herrett.
Both out do the 30-30s I have. The Herrett with less powder and less recoil has MORE FPS than the 30-30.
Maybe we should let old Myths die?
The 30 herrett was and still is a great round. Faster than the whisper or the 30-30.
A 30 Herrett is a GOOD choice
Stretch the range on a 30 Herrett and it is BETTER than the 30-30.
Just a little FPS from my barrel in 20"
135 gr sierra#7350 2435fps
The 30 Herrett is just a VERY efficient round.

I have formed .30 Herret brass and don't think it is a very worthwhile activity for use in a carbine as compared to the standard old .30/30. Not only do I not want to form the brass but I don't want to pay for it when I can get once fired 30/30 nearly free. Reloading is a worthwhile activity but I don't think a son would get that much more out of a .30 Herrett as opposed to loading a .30/30.
As far as myths go, I will suggest you take a look at the physics involved and explain how a 30 Herrett case could out perform a 30/30 when loaded to the same pressures in a carbine. Want to compare your 30 Herrett carbine to a 30/30 loaded to the same pressure?
The 30 Herrett may be efficient but you don't gain anything when used in a carbine.  It is certainly not an efficient use of money. I would not spend money on a custom barrel for this cartridge. Many others have voted the same way. That is why the .30 Herrett is about dead except among TC barrel swappers.
