what primers are you using for the 445sm?
« on: November 08, 2005, 01:18:58 PM »
all i have used so far are the cci large rifle primers.with the w296 powder things have worked out very good for me with those primers but with the aa1680 accuracy wasnt there and there was lots of fouling(i think unburned powder)?

i dont plan on switching back to 1680 this fall but next spring i plan on loading up some more ammo using that powder but i think i may use the lg mag pistol primers of some sort.

what primers are you guys using with your 445s with any powder tried so far?

i have a load thats going to be very hard to beat using the 296 powder but if i can equal it with the 1680 i may just get some of that surplus powder in the 8lb jug to save some money.

your ideas please and thankyou

I'm using large rifle primers like my book reccomended, but I think it was Warf that started using large magnum pistol primers and his group's improved alot. I use the 296 powder and I well pleased with the velocity's I'm getting. Digger

jeff, knowing that we are comparing apples and oranges, my 38-55 shoots just fine with Federal Large Pistol Magnum primers, no misfires. Problem is that I have given up a bit of accuracy as compared to the same loads with Large Rifle primers. I would think that the flame of the Mag Pistol primer would be similar to the Large Rifle, may have more to do with the cup hardness itself. I too have difficulty getting even ignition from 1680, Haywire once suggested to me CCI Small Rifle Magnum. Said that the switch to these in his 357 Max improved accuracy.

Part of the problem here is pressure. 1680 was meant to burn at 50,000 psi or so  in the 7.62X39. All other applications are afterthoughts. I'd suggest moving up to Large Rifle Magnum, develop the loads from start as you know and see what you get. Once I get my 38-55 igniting Large Rifle primers properly again, that's where I'm headed, but like you I ain't changing nothing now, deer season here is two weeks away. Time to zero up with the current loads and fill the freezer :)

I'm using CCI Large Mag Pistol.
Great accuracy and very consistent shot to shot fps (out of 10 shots fired over the chrony its +or- 5 fps 1975fps being average)
This was with the Winnie 296.

the thing i find funny about these two powders, the 1680 and the 296,is all the load data you find says the 1680 is the powder of choice???best accuracy???most fps???its hard for me to buy that.the w296 shows no signs of unburned powder in the barrel and the accuracy with all loads tried so far a very good.i guess the aa1680 must show some good signs somewhere??but i dont know where??

a long time till spring when i can do some range shooting again so the primer thing must wait till then.

deer hunting time now
