Rossi isn't that far from stealing the game.

If Rossi doesn't get their barrel program going, they're the ones that are gonna loose. They've been stalling on it for years....I personally don't think it's ever gonna happen. If they ever do, then they're provide some more competition for H&R...which would be good, it may wake up Marlin!

  We keep hopeing.
I think when/if it gets under way, that it would provide some healthy competition for NEF/H&R. Perhaps opening their eyes to more options Handi owners really want. I am not a competitive person, but in a biz with firearms it is healthy and the consumer usually comes out on top.

Arm chair mathematics is one thing...but fact based reality is another...I've had some pretty in depth conversations with a few folks at NEF.. and some of upper managements decesions leaves more than a few folks there scratching their heads...trying to figure out  the what's & why's...but as to the savings...yes...there would be some savings but not to the tune your describing...namely because of the length of the blanks Green Mountain makes for NEF and the blanks Marlin makes...On ultra-light barrels ...it is different..but on standard barrels and all the rest... they come in 1 length  then are cut down ...then chambered...and yes...I do know about the scrap recovery ratio and figuring it in...also on returned barrels & scrapped barrels and figuring the over-all production cost as well......this is one of the reasons I'm ticked off...it wouldn't cost us anymore for the option of having a longer barrel...

I think it's great they are bringing it back...and also offering more fluted choices...but they have to realize...that there is a demand for the longer barrels too...I getting ready to have a long barreled 270 or 30-06...in a Handi...and I am ticked off that I have to spend an additional 300 bucks to have it done...If the Whelen barrels had been available...I probably wouldn't have gone the 338-06 route right then...I mean I'm extreamly glad I did now...but at time...who knows...I know everyone doesn't have my tastes in rifles...heck..I'm glad of that...but it sure as heck would be nice if they at least would pay attention to what we have asked for......how many times?

in every poll everybody said that they would buy a handi in 35 whelen. now that nef has listened we need to step up to the plate and go buy them. this was our most common request so if we don't do our part NEF wont give us the time of day.

if you said you would buy one then go buy one.

Not everybody Mitch... I have no interest in a .35 Whelen.  Don't have anything against the caliber just have no burning desire to own one.

I have voted for a whelen every time I could!!

But, I dont want a whole new gun, just the barrel.  I wonder which stock choice (choices??) we will have with this gun?  And, this probably will not be a one year experiment, will it.  Have they historically back peddeled quickly not.  I remember a couple of 7mm euro offerings that came and went  but I believe they were around for a couple of years maybe.

Mac,  dont take my expansion ratio evaluation as a proposal that the 22 is a good length.  I want 24" barrels.  Most likely a small increase in performance, who knows, but no impact on weight that I could distinguish, and a much better looking and feeling balance for the gun, IMO.

I dont know if I will buy a full up whelen NEF gun though.  Too bad they did not have this available this past summer when they had the roughly 20 dollars off of most acc barrels. going.  THat would have been a no debate decision for me.  Also, waiting for the twist rate for the whelen.

Essentially, to date, this is the only new chambering offered for CF rifles, correct?

I for one will buy the .35 Whelen. I have been drooling for one for years. My neighbor found a used Rem M700 in .35 Whelen at a local gun shop and snatched it up. I had just been there 2 days before and didn't see it because it was behind the counter.   Dang it, man! I'll be a little more conscious of my surroundings from now on.

I'm don't own any NEF shotguns, but I do have a .35 Whelen Savage bolt action.  I had it rebarreled with one of those Adams & Bennet deals.

I haven't found a real accurate load yet, but I blame that on lack of time to play with it.

I will say that the Federal 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws whistle out the muzzle with 60 fps over the box listed velocity.  225 grains chugging along at 2660 fps from a 24" bbl and a .30-06 case!  I don't know, but I just think that's neat, to do so much with so little.

I don't know if I would gripe about the 22" barrel until I started to see the actual velocities.  Besides, there's other factors that would concern me more, like rifling twist.  I've heard Rem. 700 owners bemoan the 1:16" twist because it didn't handle the 250 grainers quite so well.

Buy 'em up fellers.  It's an excellent cartridge.  And the more of us buying the ammo the cheaper it will get, and the more selections we'll get.

And what's cool, is the other day a co-worker dropped off 10 empty .30-06 shells he saved from sighting in.  Free Brass!

Mac

I am with you on this one, I don't understand why NEF thinks the 26" 280
is a good idea, but a 26" 270 isn't, after all with the slightly smaller bore of
the 270, it would have to benefit as much, & should just a hair more.

I wish they would set something up like TC has done with their custom shop. When I see that a few are willing to spend $300 or more for a special barrel, I have to believe that a whole lot more would spend
$150-175.00 for a special cal. / special barrel length.

Of course this could be done without affecting the prices in the regular
barrel stocking program.

I'm wondering about the twist myself.....and what it will be..hopefully they went with a faster twist barrel than a 1:16"..like a 1:12" or 1:14"....but again that might be hoping for to-much...just so long as they didn't try to cut corners and it isn't a 1:18-1/2" rechambered 357 barrel...it will be alright...

Mac.
No need to worry. The longest bullet I could find is a 250gr Barners-x S 35835 at 1.38" long. This bullet at 2400ft MV is stabilized at 1.20 Factor in 18.5" twist,  enough to do the job. As for any other shorter and faster bullet bullet the factor goes up above what is needed.

Don't know whether you can get 2400 with a 22" barrel? QL prediction says you can, but it is pretty hot a 57K, Better take your false teeth out when you shoot that beast.

With a 16" twist you be good down to BP velocities.

Got to go hunting pretty quick.

Thank god for the 35 Whelen. Now I won't have to buy a custom barrel for the Encore muzzleloader I just ordered yesterday.
Expect it when you least expect it
