As a staunch supporter of the right to keep and bear arms I truly hope Wisconsin does NOT pass a concealed carry law.

See, ever since Wisconsin passed the constitutional amendment securing our right to keep and bear arms, the concealed weapons ban will gradually get eroded bit, by bit, until the situations where you are NOT allowed to carry will be rather narrow.

I recommend to any Wisconsinite that they read the court opinions on the two cases that came to the W. Supreme Court after the amendment was passed.  One tried to claim that the ban was unconstitutional on face value - that one lost.  The other tried to claim that the ban didn't apply on a person's property - that one won.

What is interesting is the opinions of the judges on the case that lost.  The judges said it lost on a technicality.  If the defendent had played his cards in the proper sequence, Wisconsinites very likely would have the liberty to carry concealed weapons in their cars too.

So as it is, Wisconsin should slowly approach something more similar to the Vermont style meaning that if you want to carry a gun in your pocket, all you need is a gun and a pocket.

Lizzard,

If ya want to volunteer, you could go out and carry one concealed, get arrested, and see if the NRA will cover your defense, then carefully appeal to the W. Supreme Court.  You would likely win, unless you were in a setting which the Supreme Court could say that the public safety outweighed the private right to conceal a weapon.  For example, don't get busted carrying concealed in the woods because the judges would likely say that you could just as easily open-carry.  Nor would you want to carry concealed at a public assembly of some sort because the broad police powers may outweigh your private right.

On the other hand, if you were busted carrying concealed while walking down a city street (esp. a city that has an ordinance against open carry) I would guess that you'd win the case.

But I figure it ain't worth the trouble.  Besides there's probably numerous people carrying concealed on the streets of Milwaukee right now, it's just a matter of time before they're charged and the case brought before the S. Court.
