Just picked up my first Contendor in a 7-30 Waters. It came with a 2X Leopold Scope that I do not like. I want to replace it with a variable scope. Any ideas for a good scope? I will probly sell the 2x to get another one. What about the Burris or Simmons handgun scopes?

I use a 2x7 Bushnell 3200. The field of vision is not as good as T/C's factory scopes, but I have no problems printing at 150+ with my 14". From what I rember stay away from Leo's pistol scopes for hunting.

Congrats on your first Contender! I just got started last winter, with a new 12" .22LR, then a 10" 7-30 Waters off ebay.

I put a Bushnell Trophy 2x6 on the 7-30 for around $150. I'm getting good 5 shot groups at 100 yards (for me, that's 3"). I haven't shot it any farther than that, but probably wouldn't in the field anyway.

I heard a lot of good things about the Burris 2-7X so I bought two of them. I had one fail after 10 shots on a 44 Mag TC barrel so I can't recommend them. I just picked up a Bushnell Trophy 2-6X but haven't even mounted it yet to try.

I've never heard anyone complain about a Leupold before! I've owned a 2X and a 4X. I prefer the Nikon in a 2X power but my 4X was a fine scope (I only sold it to buy the Burris...big mistake)

If money weren't an object, I'd want to try a Nikon or Leupold 2.5-8X, but I don't have any experience with them.

For the money, you really can't go wrong with either a Simmons ProHunter or the Bushnell Trophy; both in a variable configuration. I started with the Simmons on my 7-30 Waters and was able to shoot 2.5 inch groups at 100 yards. I'm also new to Contenders so I know I need to practice more. I acquired a 223 barrel and moved the Simmons to that barrel and purchased the Bushnell for the 7-30. I did just as well with the Bushnell and would go as far as saying that the Bushnell might be a tad brighter.

I use Burris and Weaver scopes on all my contenders. Burris used to make a lot of fixed power scopes Ie; 5x and 7x of which I have both.

The 5x I have on my 44mag and the 7x on my 375JDJ. Never a problem with either. All my other contenders have burris 2x7, 3x9 or 3x12. I have one weaver on my 222magAI and will probably get the same or the burris 2x7 on my 7-30 waters I ordered las month from a custom maker.

Leupold makes a good scope, but they are very proud of them for what you get. IMO burris makes a better scope and the weaver I have is just as good as the Leupold 4x I gave away.

I have not tried a bushnell yet, but they also sound good.

I have had one Burris go down and one Leupold go down through the years. that does not mean that they should be avoided.
I have several 3-12 Burris scopes on: 260 rem, 6.5-284, 284 Win, 7.82 patriot and have not had a problem.

I would suggest the 2-7 Burris with Ballistic Plex Reticle.

I have a S/S 14" 7-30 waters hunter on my contender with a bushnell 2-6 trophy scope and it work very good. Very clear optics and cross hairs are easy to see. The scope is mounted with T/C duo-rings. This set-up scares me as to the ability of the scope to pick-up objects that are 200 yds away. Much farther than I would normall shoot the 7-30 waters.
