KABOOM! .44 Mag Rechambered to .444 Marlin
« on: March 02, 2003, 05:31:19 PM »
Go to htp://members.tripod.com to see a TC .44 mag that was re-chambered to .444 Marlin.  Guy bought barrel at a gun show, and went to range with 2 boxes of .444 marlin.  On the 38the round, the barrel blew, from the breach end, peeled back like the proverbial banana.   A very interesting series of photos.

That pics been around now for quite a while. after discussing it with a few 'in the know', they think that its flaw was 1) an over load, 2) a base incorrectly installed. SSK has apparently recieved afew barrels with a '6-hole' bases drilled and tapped incorrectly. The holes were not spaced correctly and some were even over-sized. I can only imagine how weak the chamber can be made by doing this. Everything is critical. I'm not saying this was the cause or even naming a culprit. It's just to warn the basement smiths to beware. Be safe.

That would deffinately make the pucker factor go off the charts in my book.   I wonder if the poor guy still flinches whenever he drops the hammer on a round now? I know I probably would after an ordeal like that.

44 mag barrel rechambered to 444 marlin

I had my 44 mag barrel rechambered to the 444 marlin and if you don't mind recoil......it's an awesome combination.  I also had it magna ported but if i had to do it over again I wouldn't do.  Instead of the muzzle rise helping to dissapate the recoil.......it now shoves it straight back into your arm........it's VERY STOUT.  It's much more gun than a 445 supermag ever thought to be.  I've shot hundreds of rounds through it so far with no problem.........i hope that you find this information helpful.  I don't shoot it as much as i used too...........i shoot my 14 in 45/70 more so now.  But it is a good dose of reality on what the contender can do.
