Do I need a special die to neck size 7-30 waters amo? Can I neck size with the full length die by backing off a turn or two?

Don't neck size the Waters for the Contender, it will give you problems.  Take a round that you have fired in your gun.  Take your barrel off of the frame.  See how the brass fits in the barrel.  Is it flat across the chamber opening?  Brass stick out a little?  You want to set your sizing die so a sized brass will just fit level with the back of your barrel.  Use a straight edge to mark it if you want.  This should give you perfect sizing.

I have not had any problems neck sizing the 7-30. I backed off the full length die. I used mica as a lube. This allows you to see how far down the neck the die is sizing. I sized and tightened up the die until the mica mark was close to the taper.

I wish Lee would do a collett die for the 7-30. They will do a custom for about $60, but for as much as I shoot the 7-30, I will make do.

MikeM.

I neck-size only after I fire the case the first time.  Removing the barrel and checking to see if the case is flush with the back of the barrel is only partially correct.  If there is space between the back of the barrel and the breech face, you have excess headspace.  You must measure that gap and allow the case to stick out of the back of the barrel that distance.  Thus, if you fireform the case first and then just neck-size, you help compensate for that extra distance.  My Waters barrel is absolutely an M.O.A. or LESS shooter out to 200 yards using the Hornady 120 grain Single Shot Pistol Bullet or the Lyman 287346 (135 grains) cast bullet.  H-335 or WC-844 are the powders of choice.  Good-luck…BCB

what's wrong with neck sizing the 7-30 waters? and what problems were there? I've necksized mine for years and never had a problem, I have trimmed the necks mouths and so on another web site says you should not also , I have never run into problems.  kjg

Mark,

I think you'll find that a 7mm-08 collet die will work for neck sizing 7-30W cases.
