Need opinions on a different powder
« on: November 13, 2005, 04:59:58 AM »
Hey all,

I've been using 2400 powder for the past two years in both .41, and .44 mag.  With the .41 that I am using this year, combined with a GDHP bullet I'm getting a huge fireball out of the end of the barrel/cylinder gap.  I was wondering about H110, and Lil'gun.  Do you think these two would cut down on the fireball, and burn cleaner, or should I just stick with what has been working?  Thanks.

cattleskinner,

I've used 2400 in my .44 mag. for a very long time now.  I did experiment with H110 at one time, but moved away from it because of the excessive flash that I got from it.  I haven't had any experience with the Lil' gun powder, so I can't comment on that one.

2400, while not the cleanest burning, has been the best overall propellant for me.  My 5 1/2" Redhawk does not produce much of a flash with it, even with very hot handloads.

Best of luck to you, and be careful out there! :-D

2400 is a good powder for magnum pistol cartridges, and does burn hot with a reasonable flash.  As well, H110 is no less a beacon for attention if shot in the dark, and needs to be loaded toward higher-end levels for accuracy, consistent pressures, and reliable ignition.  I've not tried Lil'Gun yet, although I've heard it to be an excellent powder for magnum cartridges.  The one powder I prefer at this time for my big'uns is W296.  The recoil and muzzleblast don't seem as extreme, but the ballistic performance remains reasonable.  The best advice I can give you is to experiment with different powders, and find the niche your gun(s) like the best.

My son uses Bluedot powder for his .41 with 210 GD bullets. I don't know about the muzzle flash. Bluedot is a good powder for the .41. I use H110 in my .357 and it has a bit of muzzle flash in low light.
