It would be helpful to know what you want to do with it.  In general, look at Browning buckmarks, Smith and Wesson 22 autos, and Rugers. They all have web pages so you can shop.  Taurus makes some revolvers you may like.  All of those are decent brands and they all have some economical models.  If in doubt, try to go to a good gun shop and ask them what they have. All gun shops that sell pistols will have at least a couple of low-cost options for 22 pistols in stock. That will give you a chance to handle them.  Whatever you do, buy something that fits your hand or you'll soon become dissatisfied with it.

I am going out on a limb, and thinking you mean less expensive. There are some very good values. I 100% agree with the RUGER suggestion. Check the gun shops and pawn shops find a used ruger MKII and you won't go wrong.

It may very well need a good cleaning. I have found some really good deals on used gun shelves and in pawn shops. Pawn shops usually have the best prices.

One real imporatant thing to look for is around the chamber. Sometimes on the older guns when dry firing without the "fireing pin stop" in place the firing pin would hit the side of the face of the chamber. If this has happened, the gun is finished with out major work. The other is the safety. It should work 100 %.

The Browning Camper model would be a good gun for not too much money.

yeah, i have a buck mark camper, and its a dang good gun, very accurate for the price, and never had a problem.  (well, had a feeding problem with 60 grain .22 shorts.... but thats a different story!! :-D  :-D )  Other than that you can try and find a used single six, they are good guns, and you can find some good used ones for pretty cheap.

If you're not settled on a semi-auto, I'd suggest a Ruger Single-Six. They're resonably priced, and used ones are very reasonable. They shoot great, are very tough, and if you get the notion for a tad bit more power, you can shoot it with the magnum cylinder.

Why not give Heritage Manufacturing a try?  They are made in Florida and are about 1/3 the price of a Single Six.  I bought a single six since I thought the Heritage had to be junk because of the really low price.  Since that time, I have found out that most Heritage owners are very pleased with their choice.  Also, it got really high ratings from Gun Test...might've been more accurate that the single six in their tests if memory serves me right.

The others have already mentioned the Ruger, and I highly second that. You can get the 22/45 version for even less than a MK II. It's the same gun except it has a polymer frame which is lighter to carry, and cheaper to manufacture. It's just as accurate and reliable though. It has a less steep grip angle than the MK II, which is more comfortable for some of us. If you like the angle on a 1911, you would probably like the 22/45.
