Considering relocation to LaCrosse, need advice
« on: November 08, 2005, 02:51:33 AM »
I am considering a job relocation to LaCrosse, Wi. from north of Atlanta,GA.
Am glad to find this Wisconsin Forum and appreciate all the info I get about the area.
I did live in Omaha,Ne for 6 yrs and like winters fine.
Basically I want to know if it's a place for an outdoorsman.
I love the woods, rivers and lakes. I love fishing and boating, camping, shooting. I can't express how much I would like to live on acreage . So how affordable and available is land or small farms. Is Wisconsin supportive of gunownership? cause I couldn't live in the republic of Kalifornia.
Sorry for ranting on but I'm pretty excited to find this site and want lots of feedback.

Thanks

patience, patience.

winters up here are cold.  i mean the type of cold where you throw your coffee in the air,  and it freezes before it hits the ground, cold.

lacrosse is beautiful,  land is going through the roof.  it is not a cheap place to aquire a chunk of land.  but depending on what it is running where you live now, it may seem cheap.   i think it is going for around 5-6 grand an acre (if you are buying a larger piece.

there are alot of outdoor activities you can do,  but keep in mind the vast majority of land is private.  and folks arent exactly inviting others to come hunt their land.    there are places to go and hunt, but you had better be prepared to do your homework.

if you are a duck hunter,  you will be right on the flyway.

i am wondering about what company offered you a job?  the reason is that some companies are horrible there,  others are o.k., a few are good.   lacrosse is a funny place.  low wages and high prices.  i grew up there,  but got really tired of the lack of opportunity.

outdoorman,

I am a lifelong Wisconsin resident. I dont live in La Crosse, but I have been there many times.

The taxes in this state suck. Especially property taxes. But, there are also some pockets of the state that are "cheap" and others that are "expensive". I would say La Crosse area falls in the middle.

The winters are very cold and the summers are very hot with high humidity. You didnt say what type of job you were considering, nor the yearly salary you could draw with said job. There is mega high dollar property in the imeadiate area, but if you are willing to locate say 15-30 miles out, then there is cheaper property to be had. You could even locate in Minnesota. If you look at the area towns that have small populations, I think you will find attractive property prices to boot.

As for hunting, there are deer & turkey everywhere. As for gun laws--I would say they are about the middle of the road in relation to the 50 states. They are not as restrictive as all the leftist east/west coast states nor are they as liberal as say Alaska/Texas who believe in the rights of the productive law obiding citizan. We currantly have a democrat govenor ( former Atty general who continues to veto the conceal & carry bill )  Yeah, we are the only state in the midwest that does not have C/C due to a governor who knows what's "best" for the tax paying peasants who pay his yearly salary and housing in the state mansion.

To summarize---I would say that living in Wisconsin is "pretty good". I guess what really dictates a move here is what kind of salary you are looking at .

Money dictates ones choices.
