Need a Hunting Load For My .45-110..
« on: March 15, 2003, 11:59:48 AM »
Say all, looking for a hunting load for my Shiloh Sharps .45-110.  Instead of just shooting at targets I'm looking forward to going buffalo hunting with my cousin.  Going to do it the "old Way" by using my Sharps to this time.  What I'm looking for is a bullet that will give good expansion as well as good penetration?  Thanks for any and all information.  Lawdog

Not knowing what powder you want to use it is hard to say, but if it were me and was hunting the old way as you say I would use a 500-gr 1881 1 in 20 ALLOY design bullet from http://www.bonusbullets.com/BlackPowderBullets.htm with 100.0 gr of FFg Black Powder.

These are very effective against a bison and have put down many with a single shot.

I myself will be hunting a bison this year using my 45-90 loaded with 90.0 gr of FFFg compressed .450" with a .060 card wad and a grease cookie and using a 540-gr paper patched bullet.
