Time to weigh my options
« on: November 13, 2005, 01:17:32 AM »
Well, yesterday was gun season here in North " bubba " Carolina. I went out yesterday morning early and got set up. Had my 45-70 ready to go. There was so much traffic in the woods I climbed down and went home.   There was some yahoo in the woods, and for a while it was quiet. Then I heard a shot, matter of fact, I heard 3 or 4 shots. Not all coming from the same place. I figured that I wasn't in the right spot. Well, I was walking back to the truck and as I was walking, I noticed that the places I heard the shots from trucks were coming out with no deer in the back. I guess here, if they have a bad day, they just shoot to have something to do, and screw up everybody else. :x  Well, my passion is hunting, but I also like to go to the range. I guess it will be some serious range time for me and get even more aquainted with my arsenal. I will hunt my home state of Tenn. more and just hunt with the bow here during archery season. I need to make sure my rifles are dead on and maybe after the first of the year try to get some money together and try my hand at handloading. After the opening day I'm very discouraged. :?

Even though I own the land I hunt on I don't usually go out opening day. The yahoos will get bored and cold and quit hunting soon. I enjoy the late season more anyway. I assume you were hunting public land?

Only good (?) thing with yahoos, is,  sometimes they get the deer moving, hopefully, toward your stand.

Sorry to hear about that, Tommy, but it's an all too familiar story.

I don't know, markus. The last week of archery season, I almost got shot by some idiot that thought he would start ML season a little early, and yes it was public land. Thank goodness, I can go back to my home state of TN. a few times a year and hunt , but it will initially be expensive. I have some friends I hope, that will understand. I know it was just opening day, but I figure I will get in touch with the dept. of the Interior and see if those boys can get the GWs here to do their job. These GWs don't work that hard here at all. I know. And most of the yahoos here are related to each other here some way or the other. . I know you have these idiots in every state, but I have not seen the likes here in NC.

Tommy:

Don't get discouraged...believe me...I'm home from deer camp only after 1 very messed up opening day...the folks on a lease next me to the property I'm hunting...was shooting everything that moved into my valley...and some where even shooting down onto my section near me...We had deer moving all around...none that I could range quick enough for a shot...when I finnally did get a shot...I missed...got in a hurry and pulled it is the only thing I can think of...spent the next 2 hours looking for blood and any sign of an actuall hit...finnally saw her right at dark...bounding thru the woods where I tracked her...walked 1/2 mile back up to the top of the ridge line...got in the jeep...pulled out on the grassy path I had traveled 10 times before...and ran up on a green 1" square curved piece of steel metal...putting a nice hole thru my a/c condersor coil..transmission cooler.and radiator...pinched off the tubing best I could...drove 35 miles stopping along the way about a few times till I got to a auto zone..put in stop leak..antifreeze...tranny fluid and drove back home by 10:30 last nite for a 80 mile trip stopping every half hour to check fluids...now I get to work on this morning and tommorrow morning.. to try to get it fixed...before heading back for somemore fun :)  :-D  :)

My Good Wife has always told me " Everything for a Reason"...it's very hard to believe that when Mr.Murphy is running rampat all around you...but...I still do believe it...so...the long of it is...don't give up hope...there will always be good days...and bad days...it's up to you to make the best of whichever the Lord throws your way... :D

Mac, I guess your sentiments of "If you didn't have bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all"....pretty much summed it up.....but don't loose hope, it only takes one good opportunity to change your luck and make for a happy ending!!

Thanks Tim...but at the rate I'm going...I won't be able to afford any hunting this season...I forgot to mention...before we left camp yesterday morning...my battery was dead as well...we did get it started..but...I'm looking at replacing it as well...so chalk up another $60...they don't make things easy to try to work on yourself these days...looks like the whole front clip is going to have to come off just to remove everything...and I'm not set up here to do it ...so...I gotta put everything back together just so I can get in in somewhere tomorrow to fix it.....

Boy I'm having fun...

Man same here too. I know how excited you where to use your 338-06 and 45-70. I hate working on vehicles, been doing a ton of that this year- so I know how it can be. I hope it all turns up for you.
And Tommy, sorry to hear about your hunt. I know how some impatient misguided hunters can be.  Ruin an entire day for someone. And that could have been one of the only days he had to hunt.
Hopefully things will get better back home in TN for ya.

Tommy and Mac remember some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you. I know that don't help much now but when you are back on top maybe it will.

Thanks for your words and I'll try again when I can. You just can't beat the handiholics here at GRAYBEARDS! :-D  :D  :)  Thanks guys!

Reflecting back on my little ordeal...some good did come out of it...I made a aquiantince thru my hunting club..who has become a pretty good Friend...he followed me all the way to the edge of town before I stopped and had him turn back...70 mile round trip..just to make sure I got there...pretty darn nice of him...so...Larry...Your the best Bro...Thank You...I hope to return the favour sometime...

My advice to any who have something like this happen...don't get in a hurry in a strange town...even the most simple directions can get screwed up in your head(at least  for me)...took several stops to get to the store...and several phone calls to do that...the old saying holds true...the hurrier I go...the behinder I get...

And I thought my first day was bad, ATV's everywhere, a couple drunks, even a group of females doing who knows what.  At least I didn't get shot at.  All in all I guess not too bad a day.

Our gun season opens this Sat hope it goes well for all in OK I will be on the road for the week of Thanksgiving so I will not get out until the last week if then?? Taking the 445 in case I get a chance to hunt & the 4570 up north. Last year opening weekend had atv's motorcycles all over the woods. I think some people use opening weekend for a vacation to go play & not do any serious hunting.

Sorry to hear of your problems Mac/Tommyyo1 glad you are OK there are some out there that give us a bad rap

To all be safe!! & Good luck :D
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
