Which is the better action the 700 or the 721.  I have heard several old timers say "the 721 is to Remington what the pre-64 is Winchester? What are your thoughts?

I havent used any Rem action other than the 700, and swear by it, as do many who put their life on the line by entrusting it. Its got to be doing something right :)

Wish I could give more info, Im sure others lurking will see this and chime in.

I have the short action version of the 721, it is the 722 action.  I also have a long action M700.

The 722 action is slicker then the M700 action.  The M722 is a strong action.  Mine is in .300 Savage caliber and my reloads are at the listed maximum.  I have had absolutely no problems with the loads.  The only thing I do not like about it is the safety.  The safetys on Remington bolt actions have the tendency to rub of against the body when the rifle is carried by a sling.  And the safety rubs against the body.

The M700 is not as slick as my M722 bolt.  It is a good accurate rifle.  With its Mountain Rifle stock and factory recoil pad it is a nicer looking rifle then the M722 and any M721 that I have seen.  The finsh on the M700 looks nicer.

*I should note that the .300 Savage was chambered in older M99 lever action rifles.  The SAAMI average pressure for the round is 46,000 because of that.

Over the years I have been offered enough for the M722 to go out and buy a new M700 BDL.  It seems that the M722 action has a following in the bench rest crowd.  I could not see my Dad's deer rifle being torn apart to become the bases of a bench rest rifle.

These actions are really so close it is scary.  The biggest difference is the model number.  That said, I believe there was some minor changes to the bolt design to make them less expensive to make.  May be some other minor changes too, but a 721/722 will fit in a 700 ADL stock just fine if you inlet the barrel channel to clear the rear sight swell.

The 700's generally are better looking, but they are not better shooting.  No need to trade in or sell a 721/722 for a 700 just for the looks if you are going to use if for what it was made for.
