Cleaning rifled slug barrell
« on: November 15, 2005, 03:22:36 AM »
I posted this on the shotgun page as well but this one gets more traffic and alot of you guys have an accessory rifled slug barrell so hopefully you can help.  What is the best way to clean/polish a new 20 ga. USH barrell?  I just got one and also a .450 and I need to clean and sight them in.  Should I use JB on the slug gun just like all the other handi barrels or is there a better way?  Or should I just run some solvent soaked patches down it and shoot it without poslising it?  I will be shooting sabotted slugs so I do not really know if the barrell needs polished or not.  Thanks for any input.   Andrew

Since the barrel will be new..run a super tight patch thru the bore and see if it snags anywhere..if it doesn't..a few passes with flitz will polish it nicely...if it does..then polish it more...till your patches don't snag..you can feel the difference between those that are polished...and those that aren't on most new barrels..I've only had 1 barrel that just needed a few passes with the flitz...and that was my 45-70 Limited..You'll still need to clean everything out of it when you get it...the factory usually doesn't clean anything..and you'll get all kinds of junk out of them...

What Mac says.
It would take even longer to "wear" a barrel in using plastic and the same with the muzzle loaders "sidekicks" using sabot or prb's.

Why isn't this in a sticky in the Shotgun forum/Muzzle Loader forum? along with the trigger/manufacturer dates?

Perhaps you should ask the moderator there to do so...?
