Caliber offerings?

I'm wanting something new and was wondering what all they had to offer outside of their "normal" calibers listed in their 2005 catalog. I know they now have the 7.62x39 and the .35 whelen, but is there anything else? I'm wanting to send them my .25-06 SB2 Handi frame for a few new barrels soon and have never done this before, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks !!

Well I thought about one that H&R doesn't offer.... and that would be to take a .308 barrel and have it re-bored to a .358 Winchester cartridge.  I have hunted with the .35 Whelen and it was too much for dark woods hunting as it literally blew up when hitting whitetail using factory Remington loads.

I had thought about making a .35 Remington, the same cartridge as my Marlin 336CS, BUT..... I really like the .358 Winchester as well.

Making a .35 Remington from a .357 magnum barrel is not going to work because of the case differance.  And I know that stretching the .357 magnum to a .357 maximum will achieve the same results for a .35 Remington.  One can also bore out a 30-30 barrel to .358 and they call that a 35-03 resulting in the same balistics I believe.

That was the main reason for selling my .35 Whelen barrel to MSP Ret  :cry:  the .35 Whelen still had its place, but at that time not in my gun cabnet.

I still want a .358 Winchester

I know they have the 500 S&W. Not sure about it, but doesn't the futed heavy barrel .223 use a 1-9 twist? That means that you can use the heavy 223 loads. Might be an option you want to look into.

Welcome to GBO, Crosshair! :D  Don't be startin no rumors, ALL H&R/NEF .223 barrels are 1:12" twist. :wink:

No, I just called the support number and they said that the heavy barrel fluted SB2-F23 model has a 1-9 twist, all else has a 1-12.  I want to make subsonic .223 loads and need the 1-9 twist. BTW, the 500 S&W has a 1-18.75 twist. They also have that barrel for the barrel accesory program.

Hmmm, that's good news IF it's true, we've got conflicting info from CS more than once, just depends on who you talked to....the .500 S&W has been available for about a year, now...All of the barrel twists are in the FAQ.

Oops, didn't see the 500S&W there. I have called the support place in the past and the person at the other end has said both times that the SB2-F23 model has a 1-9 twist. I work at Wal-Mart (and make a good wage) we all get a extra "christmas discount" on top of our regular discount on one item in the store. Guess what I plan on getting. :grin: Getting guns for less than wholesale is nice. 8)

Well, that's good news, but I still emailed them to confirm it in writing so I can post it in the FAQ.

Bluebayou is also a Walmart employee, he's provided us with all the UPCs for the Walmart offerings so they could be posted in the FAQ.

I hope Sports South gets some of the fluted .223s in stock before you need it, they're out of em now.

Sure would be nice if the 223 fluted barrel is 1 in 9 twist. I plan on getting a 223 barrel first of the year, I'd definately make it a fluted if this is true.

Sure hope the 1-9 twist thing is true. I wish more factory rifles would use that twist instead of the 1-12.

I too hope this to be true. But also fellas, you have to ask yourself...
if it is a 1-9 will I find an accurate a load as the WWB 45gr JHP's for it? :)

That rocks.  Looks like I won't be getting that Stevens 200 with the 1 in 9 twist after all.  I have been wanting to load some "big" bullets for the 223 for awhile now.  That is awesome news.  I have been griping that Savage was the only one to make a fast 223 twist.  Remington-1 in 12.

Good to see another WalMart person around.
