.223 TWIST RATE TO CHANGE IN 2006
« on: November 19, 2005, 07:44:05 AM »
Due to Crosshair's reply on .223 twist rate in the Caliber Offerings thread, I verified with H&R/NEF Customer Service by email that the current .223 Fluted Ultra and all 2006 .223 barrels are/will have a 1:9" twist rate!!! Great news for those that want to shoot heavier .224" bullets.

Shouldn't really make a difference.  Winchester WB 45gr HP's shot very well in both of my target AR's, and they each wore Wilson 1/8" twist barrels.  Groups averaged 3/4", wiht a few coming down to almost 1/2"!

:toast: This is great news indeed.
I was looking around for another 223 but one with a better twist rate. Now you can have the best of both worlds. How much is this barrel again through the program? $115 I though.

Edit- This does only refer to the New Fluted Bull Barrels...right?
I mean not all new production 223 barrels  (like normal weight, light weight, and normal Bull Barrels)  will have a 1-9 will they?
Just curious.

That is good news. Glad I waited.  BTW does anyone know what the twist is on the .204 and .22-250, couldn't find it on the sticky? :? I think this calls for a whole new gun, Ultra Varmint Fluted in .223. 8)

YES THEY SHOULD BE 1 IN 9. ALL NEW 223 STARTING THE FIRST OF THE YEAR SHOULD BE 1 IN 9

To my question...

Can you confirm that the .223 heavy fluted SB2-F23 barrel has a 1:9" twist? If it does, I'm sure there are going to be a lot more orders for
it!!

Thanks Tim. It would be interesting if they did all 223 barrels from now on with a 1-9 twist.  Not that thats a bad thing, just a change that seems real quiet. Strange we didn't hear about this sooner, when they first came out a few months ago.
Oh-well. I look forward to placing my order  8)

Wow, I'm famous now. Good thing I asked specifically if they had a fast twist barrel the first time I first called them a few months ago. Looks like they are going to be backordered for awhile on the .223 barrels now. Good to see that someone is following the market demands and making a 1-9 twist barrel standard in something besides an AR for those heavy bullets.

twist rate for ultra fluted
« Reply #10 on: November 19, 2005, 03:16:29 PM »
I bought my ultra fluted 223 late last year.  Did it come with a 1:9 twist or is this a change only on recently made rifles?

All of the .223s coming from H&R now are 1:9"....

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=77148

Check the twist rate with a tight patch on a jag, push the patch into the bore a ways,  mark the rod where it enters the barrel with a piece of tape wrapped around the rod with the ends stuck together like a little flag, withdraw it until it rotates one full turn, measure from the barrel to the mark....that's the twist rate. The rod must rotate freely to do this.

Enjoy the fame while it lasts.  :D Good job. If you don't mind, the next time you have NEF on the phone ask the what the twist rates are for the .204 and .22-250 and pass it on. I'd appreciate it. 8)

mitchell;

The 22-250 must be a 1 in 14 inch twist. My UVF won't stablize a 60gr. V-Max bullet. I get circle 8's on my targets at 100yds. Weird!
But I'm shooting those same 60gr. V-Max's out of my .223 Ultra that I've had for nearly three years now.
And suprising... they are VERY ACCURATE!

I was just about to ask what the twist rate was.  If I got such a rifle it would be for targets primarily, and I'd want to use the heaviest variety of bullets.  So heck, I wish they'd go tighter.  90gr Sierra matchking for me!
