Christened the H&R yesterday (pic is a bit graphic)
« on: November 16, 2005, 07:03:31 PM »
Well I shot a nice 7 point yesterday on opening day. First blood for the Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe. I used brenneke gold magnums (600 grn 3 inch 12 gauge).

Should have been a 10 point but one side of the rack was broke from a fight or something.

I shot it in the middle of the rainstorm we had in MI yesterday evening. I don't think I will do that again. I had to go back and look for it today because it was raing so hard we couldn't see.

Congratulations Paul. All I got was wet. I did let a bunch of does and a little forky pass at 30 yards, maybe he will grow up a little next year. We still have about 220 acres of standing corn. It should get much better when that is harvested. I have been only hunting one buck, he is a 130-140 class 8 point. Had him within bow range twice last week, but he was with a doe and wouldn't give me a shot.

I shot that one within bow range, about 25 yards or so. Normally my shots are around 75 yards on this property.

I hunt from a REALLY nice blind, so I was dry and warm during the hunt. Got pretty wet looking for the deer though. Right after I shot it the sky opened up and all heck broke loose. Thunder, lightning and raining so hard you could not see sometimes. We looked for a few hours in the woods it ran into but could not find it. I went back in the morning and it was right there on the other side of the fence it jumped over. We probably almost tripped over it the night before. :) I shot it right at dusk, after being in my blind for about 12 hours. I got in about 5:30 in the morning and didn't get home until about 8 at night.

If I was stand hunting I would not have hunted opening day, it was NASTY here. I saw a doe with a couple of little ones tagging along and another buck early in the morning, but too far away and I couldn't get him to stop or come closer. We can't shoot does on this property, owners rules.

My buddy shot this one the following day while I was retrieving mine on the same property.

Paul,

With bucks like that running around, who needs does anyways.  Congratulations to your buddy! I'll bet he didn't have to look twice at that one.

Nice to see all the Michigan posts.

Christened my new 12 gauge USH Deluxe with a nice 7 point up in Ubly in Michigan's Thumb on opening day, 3 o'clock in the afternoon in the rain.

Weather was brutal this year.  Worst opening 3 day period I can remember in a long time.  Nice to get one early though and exercise some options over the next two days!

Congrats to all!

Great Buck, congrats.  We had a cloudy opening day (last Saturday here in Indiana) but got the rain on Monday and then again on Tuesday.  Glad I missed it, had to work....Again, nice buck.
