ruger scope rings too big?
« on: December 02, 2005, 03:10:42 PM »
I just recently got back from an Ohio deer hunt and while there Knocked the scope loose on my 44SRH. It would spin freely in the rings. I tried to tighten them tonight but the top ring is tight against the bottom ring. So do I mill some of the rings where they mate together or do I just shim the scope..it's a leupold 2.5x LER thanks in advance. Kevin

Some thing doesnt sound right here. Was it tight before you went? If every thing checks out and you determine that its definitely the rings then I would call Ruger and ask them to make it right. If the rings are over sized and you mill off the tops you are going to egg shape your scope when you tighten it down. That's almost certain to cause a scope to fail.  KN

Did you mount the scope? Sounds like someone may have gotten carried away with the lapping process.. LockTite won't hold a scipe in such a situation. There's no way to damage a ring so that it won't tighten on a scope unless they were lapped or were the wrong size from the get go. Probably the fix is new rings. Speak with Ruger service.. If its their fault they will take care of the problem.

The scope has been mounted for about 4 years.. I ended up Milling the flats on the upper halves of the rings . I remounted the scope and all seems tight and true...If it happens again I'll get the new rings..I think these actually streched.
