243 Factory Ammo for 28inch Pro Hunter barrel ?

Hello , I just bought my first Thompson . I have the PH stainless thumbhole. The first barrel I got was chambered in .243 . I was wondering about other peoples experience shooting factory ammo thru this particular set-up .
My intention would be to do some deer hunting , coyote shooting with this gun . Our deer out in Southern California are smaller than our coyotes . Just kidding ! Barely .
Also I have a feeling that out here in California we will be going to a lead ammo ban by next year . So does any have any non-toxic alternatives that work .

Any comments or suggestions that could narrow my search would be greatly appreciated . Especially considering how the cost of shooting alot of different ammo adds up.
