26" .280 Velocities?
« on: November 20, 2005, 02:07:17 PM »
I'm picking up a 26" Handi in .280 tomorrow, and I was curious to see what velocities members are getting with 140gr bullets.  I am hoping to get 3100 fps, which seems realistic with the 26" barrel.

So, what velocities are the .280 shooters getting?

Digger gets 2975 with the 150gr Rem factory rounds. Handirifle was getting 3200-3300 fps with the 140gr before he sold it!!

I think 3100 fps. is quite reachable with the 280,and its my no.1 go to gun in the Handi lineup. They really need to use the 26" barrels on all the Varmit barrels and the 270. It should make the 270 into a very fine big game rifle. The 280 gets very close to my 7 Mag BAR in FPS. Digger

Well, I have a pound of IMR 4831 and 4350, so I'll have to start on a load soon.  I may try some R-22, and I have a few factory loads I want to chronograph.

I just bought five boxes of Federal Premium HE 140gr Trophy Bonded .280 loads from Midway (at $13/box!), and they list a 3150 muzzle velocity on the box.  Hornady Light Mag 139gr bullets chrono'd 3050 out of my 22" Mountain Rifle, so I would expect similar results out of the Federal ammo.

The Horn. Light Magnum 139SST clocked about 3,104 Ave. in big brother's
Handi. I think you could possibly get 3,150 or so & that would be about it.
But, that is very good for the cartridge & any medium game you choose to pop!

None of us regulars were allocated one of those top secret, Titanium &
cripto. Handi's I am afraid.

Well, I picked up the .280 Handi this morning, and I went ahead and Flitzed the bore (which was a little dirty).  The trigger isn't bad on this gun, and it definitely has a lot of potential.  I'm going to put together a few loads tonight, and go ahead and mount a scope on it.  Maybe I'll have a range report tomorrow evening.
