H414 in .243 Win. Any success?

I've been looking for a different .243 powder since my Encore barrel doesn't like my favorite, H380, and IMR 4350 doesn't meter great.  The H414 looks more versatile that 4350 and is a ball powder, so it should be as nice to work with as H380, while matching 4350 velocities in 55 gr.-100gr. bullets.  Any favorite loads with this?  My only concern is the great variation between the Hodgdon Annual Manual, Nosler #4, and the latest Lyman book.  Max loads vary pretty heavily between the three, even with the same bullets.  Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid that I won't be of much help, but I have used the H414 in .243. I've yet to get this gun to shoot properly with any powder, so I can't tell if the H414 worked well or not. I can say, however that I was getting flattened and cratered primers at 44 grains, this with an 85gr Sierra HPBT, Win. cases, CCI 200 primers, and a 2.635 OAL. Of course this may be different with your gun, but it's what I experienced. I think that my initial load data came from the Lee loading book. I'm working on a few issues with the gun, and if I ever get it shooting well, I'll go back and try the H414 again.

I like it! I like it!  I quit loading anything but bulk Winchester 80 gr. bullets and H414 in my .243.  It is easy to work with and is very accurate.  I use the .243 as my sub-270 varmit load.

I tried H414 with 55 grain plastic tipped bullets and found the powder to be to slow. It left unburnt powder in the barrel. I haven't tried it with heavy bullets but it's supposed to be one of the better ones. Personally I like IMR-3031 for the 55 gr bullets and IMR-4831 for 70 gr and above. It meters ok, cut a kernel every now and then but with the right technique it dispenses fairly consistently. I'm just now trying IMR-4350 but haven't gotten the accuracy out of it that I want....

Look at the velocities in each of those relaoding manuals and see if the max pressure is around the same velocity. If so you can use your chronograph to tell when you get close to their recommended max...

I had good luck with H-414 and 70 gr. Hornady's and 71 gr Berger BT MEF's. I got consistant 0.3's 0.4's in a Mod 70 varmint. Hodgdon H-4350 solves the problem of the IMR "logs" the Hodgdon is a short-cut extreme powder now. They don't call it short-cut like they do with the H-4831sc because there is no H-4350 long-cut anymore.

H-414 is my #1 powder in my 22-250, and .308. It's #2 in my .243 because H-4831sc shoots tighter groups at top velocitys. Every gun is a law unto itself, you just need to see what it likes.

Selmer: Try H-414 and Sierra 60 gr. hollow points, alot of .243's seem to do well with this combo. Good luck. Dean.
