:roll: Which truck is best for taking your deer?

My buddy has (had) a new Nissan, crew cab, 4x4, V-8, loaded.  He took a very nice 10 point about 5 AM yesterday morning.  He was only running about 70 mph when the deer just jumped out and slapped the truck.  The deer was dead before it hit the ground, the truck was not driveable, and has about 6-7 thousand dollars in damage.  Nothing a new front bumper, grill, hood, wind shield, both fenders, a passenger side door, and twenty pounds, or so, of bondo won't fix.

And to top it off, the Game Warren that showed up about 10 minutes after the accident, told him he couldn't have the deer (he want the rack).  As I was coming home this evening the deer was still there in the ditch where it died.   :cry:  :cry:  :cry:

Sure sounds like the truck passed the government crumple test.

I took a little fork at about 55 MPH.  It only did $1600 worth of damage to my pickup.  I keep thinking a brush guard on the front might be worth the money.  

In Mexico I have seen big rigs with front guards made out of heavy welded metal for horses and cows.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!

A grill guard would have been the ticket.   Not the cheap, chrome one, either.   Only problem is the added weight you will carry unnecessarily 99.99% of the time.
At least your friend was not hurt and had insurance. right?    
Best story I have heard was my dad hitting two at once and had a third run into the driver's door simultaneously.

When I was just a kid a couple of elderly ladies hit a doe in front of my Grandfathers house.  He heard the wreck and ran down the hill to them.  The doe went through the windshield and kicked them both to death before dying itself.  This all in the 2-3 minutes it took Grandpa to get there.

Pound for pound you can't beat a Mack. You don't need a premium truck to do the job. No, I'm not a premium truck basher. The premiums ride nicer but don't provide any more penetration.  :wink:   :)  :)  :)

Dave is right, it is hard to beat a big rig.  Back in the late 60's when logging was booming in the Klamath Country we made a trip out to town in the early morning.  It was late October and the moon at night was full.  In 30 miles we counted over 25 road kill deer.  From the evidence we knew that it had to be a big rig at times, killing three or four deer at a time.  Rather shocking to say the least.

Bear are becoming a more common road kill in this State.  The amount of damage is going up because of size.

A year or so back a bunch of black Angus cattle got out on the roadway at night.  Caused major damage to a number of vehicles, including a Highway Patrol cruiser.

 Hitting a horse is bad medicine.  Normally the legs fold-up and they go into the passenger compartment.  If the passengers are not killed on impact they are killed or injured by the animal.

Not truly in the "road kill" category but I did get a fork horn with a C-130H while doing a touch and go landing. We elected to stop the hole through the skin under the battery compartment.  The Alaska ANG had a severe over torque on all four engines with a C-130H doing a go-around to miss a cow moose and her calf. The pilot was asked why it happened and he said to avoid hitting the moose on the runway. When asked why he had the power pushed up so high his comment was "we coudn't get more"!  :eek:

Dave:  Did they stamp a miniature moose under the pilots window, for a mission completed.

At the small airport in Gold Beach, Oregon pilots need to buzz the landing strip so that somebody comes out and runs the deer off.  If I had my rathers in would be not taking on any critter in an aircraft.

I can't say about the Alaska unit. The Louisiana ANG did get a C-130H from our unit complete with a small fork horn silhouette with the name "Road Kill" under it.  :)

1965, Thanksgiving night after hunting all day. 7 point buck, 155 lbs. - 57 Chevy station wagon at 60 mph. After washing off the hood, bumper & windshield, there wasn't a trace of damage to the chevy.

Who could pass this up! I've only hit one deer and it was a rea buck in Germany. I strongly reccommend a 1962 DMW automobile. The one where the doors open frontward, you mix oil with the gas andv all three cylinders have they're own points and condensers.

The deer I hit was evry dead and the passenger side front fender crumpled badly. It was smasshed back into the tire and needed fixing befor I could move the car. I grabbed the fender well and pulled, in effort to free the tire. To my amazement the entire crunch pulled out and you could not tell it ever happened!

True story!!!!!!!!!

Hit a Kansas doe back in August of this year in a '03 Freightliner Columbia at 65 mph. Scattered the deer for 60 or 70 yards to the point of not being able to tell what it had been. Bent the plastic bumper back behind the left front tire  ( which made a right turn pretty interesting ) and broke the fiberglass front end in six different places. The whole front end had to be replaced. They don't make 'em like they used to. Hit a small spike in Germany back in '89 in a 86 ford Escort. American Escort, not the German one. Killed the spike and blew the drivers side headlight. Darned tuff little car.

Well it was not a deer that did all the damage to my car.  I am a police officer and I was going to a accident (vehicle down an in a ditch with driver entrapped).  Well I was running light and siren and as I passed a roadkilled deer the buzzard flew up into the path of my car.  The buzzard hit the windshield while i was running around 90 mph give or take.  luckily, it did not hit head on but struck the passenger side windshield pillar.  Needless to say the windshield was shattered.    Now I know how to kill them pesty buzzards (bullet won't work but crown vics do).  Now I have the nickname of ol' Buzzard or Buzzard killer depending on who you talk to.

Several years ago I center punched a large ND Doe (170Lb range). I was driving an Expedition with a large steel grill guard (Think Cattleguard). The doe was toast, the grill guard was tilted back abut 2", it put a crease in the sheetmetal above the drivers side headlight and broke the filiment in the drivers side headlight. But in a new bulb, pulled the grill guard out with a come-a-long.
