woods/camp gun
« on: August 17, 2005, 01:38:08 PM »
I am thinking about getting a 45 blackhawk for a camp/woods gun.  I usually carry a DA in 357 but have been thinking about upping the power.  I like rugers, however, the shortest barrel in a redhawk is 5.5.  therefore the idea of a blakhawk with a 4 5/8 barrel and handloads.  Any thoughts??

I think it would make a great little "packing" gun for being in camp, or anywhere else in the field.

The blakhawk with a 4 5/8 barrel would work great.  :D

I think that you'll be well served by the 45 Colt with a 4 5/8th inch barrel. My woods gun is a Ruger SBG in 44 mag with a 5.5" barrel. It is nice to have when and if a problem arises.

not limited by single action?

So you would not feel limited by a single action?  My thoughts are with the recoil of a hot 45 recocking would not slow things down.

While ordering that Blackhawk, don't forget to order the .45ACP cylinder.  Very cheap when bought with the gun.  Comes in handy for targets and cheap plinking.  Cheap Russian ammo makes it tough to sit down to loading press.  All I've seen have been very accurate to boot.  The .357/9mm conversion doesn't work as well.

My bumming around the woods gun is a blued Ruger SBH with a 4 5/8" barrel that I carry in a Cheyenne double loop cross draw holster and loaded with 240 grain SWC mags. I don't feel handicapped with a single action at all.

I have the 22, 32 mag, 357, 41, and 45 with 4 5/8" barrels.  They will shoot VERY well with handloads (exept 22, which shoots good with cci green tag or ww T22).   Comfortable for packing AND reliable.

Good Choice.

While they cost a bit more, I am a fan of the Vaquero over the Black Hawk.  I don't know anyone that has ever adjusted the sight on a Black Hawk. With a Vaq. there is no blade to lose either.  You will learn the sight picture and will instinctively adjust to range etc. with practice.

I love my 44 super blackhawk, 4 5/8"
« Reply #12 on: November 23, 2005, 05:19:15 PM »
I carry it everyday, and shoot it all the time...I swapped out the grips for elk, and put in a belt mountain pin...and lightened the springs...
She is a real dream...the 45 colt would be great, as long as you aren't thinkin' for Grizzlies...then a 475 would be my choice...

Which every Caliber...(I vote 45 colt)  RELOAD...you can really bring out the beauty of that wonderful round with it...

I also use this holster...

and these grips...

mikedb, That would be a good choice. I've carried a .45,4 5/8, blackhawk for years in the northwoods of WI., while baiting bear and also bummin' through the woods to my favorite fishing hole. Lately we've had a increase in bear encounters (because of lack of bear permits, it will be 9 years of applying for me this year) I've went to a .44 Bisley Vaquero this last year.I should have got it in a .45. I like the vaquero for the fixed sights. I handload, so can tailor my loads to my sighting. If you are concerned with sight adj. go with the blackhawk or do what I did and have a 'smith install a dovetail front sight. I'm also contemplating getting my 50th anny. blackhawk converted to .44spec. Waiting to see if ruger is going to make this a production item, then keep it a .357 and buy new to convert. I would suggest a good design in a cast bullet 260-300gr and dont worry about making it a magnum. a .45 lumbering along at around a 1000fps is devistating on the one end and just plain fun on yours.

I think if you ever have to use it against a 4-footed critter, you probably won't have time for more than 1-2 shots anyway...

and if you have to use it against a 2-legged critter...one shot is all you'll need if you hit him!!!!  :D

4 5/8 inch Blackhawk is a great choice. Used one of these for bumming around myself, had Eagle grips put Sambar Stag on it (when you could still get those) and also had an extra .45 acp cylinder for it.

My fave lately has been a S&W model 25. 45 acp mountain gun. My particular firearm has been thru the S&W performance shop. Easy packin and smooth shootin.

a man after my own heart. I mostly hunt with single actions but for a carry gun its hard to beat a 4 inch N frame. My 625 mountain is one of my most carried. I usually have it loaded with auto rims with a 250 at about 900 fps.
