i changed to a differant bullet this time,no more of those 240gr Remingtons JHPs on deer.the 240gr Hornady XTP entered the shoulder on the left side and exited on the right side of her.the doe went down right there.from the looks of the exit hole it seems the XTP did in fact expand some but not as much as you might think.these XTPs are very tuff from the looks of it unlike the hollow point Remington boolits.i was using the same max load of 33.5gr of w296 powder and the book says 1900 fps,dont know for sure as i have no chrono.accuracy with this boolit was very good too.

Call Hornady, they'll tell you more than you want to know about those bullets. They probably are a bit on the hard side, probably made with 444 Marlin in mind. They designed the 357 180 XTP to stay together at 2100 fps. It does it too! It is interesting to note that 2100 is the outside of what that bullet can be driven at from a 357 Max carbine and is within 200 fps of what a 35 Remington does with one......

John i have shot a number of deer with this bullet years back with my first Knight rifle.i was only shooting 80 and then 90 grains of ff black powderback then.the speeds from these lower charges of black powder never did make the bullet work.it just punched a hole through the deer with very little or no expansion.i got away from them and went with a premium bullet for the muzz loader.now i am shooting very high charges of 777 or 3 fifty grain pyro pellets and im getting max speeds out of the muzz loaders.the XTPs might just work with these charges and i can save some $$ compaired to one dollar each for the Barnes Mz Expanders that i use now.

i had about 50 of them left from those days so i loaded some up to try and they do hold together for sure

maybe i should try out my 357max too on a deer :grin:

i use 200 xtp with 4227 out of20 in barrel handi i get 1970 fps.....cant find my notes 4 240 gr,,,,sorry,,,,,but i use 240 xtp in my huntsman :grin: i get 1385 with 80 gr rs pryo...or...1600 with 90 gr pryo,,,killed 6 or7 plus with 90 to 100 gr.had 1 even get up after shot but it was a little to far back and she ran 10 yds a fell 100 # doe this year...i have recoverd 2 bullets from ft stuffers all were perfect expansion.......usally leave big exit holes....id throw those remmys away.........hope this helps ...jb

i'm not surprised to see the .240 gr' xtp open up just a little on a doe -- if she wasn't too big. i think that bullet probably performed as advertised since it is supposed to function at higher velocities than their 200 gr' xtp by about 175 fps perhaps. i think you'd get the best results on deer out of a black powder rifle using their 200 gr instead at the lower impact velocities.

i still believe that the hollowpoints are the best way to go on deer. i think your better success with a more versatile jhp' has just proven that. i have loaded both Rem' and Win' 240 gr' jhp's but always figured they were for black bear. (Dick Metcalf's suggestion of a Rem' 210 gr' jhp as his go-anywhere whitetail load makes sense to me, however. i think it's probably better on any whitetail out there than the 240 gr' Rem' could ever be because of its velocities achieved and its lighter construction-- i'd guess)

paco kelly wrote of his good success on deer using the 180 gr' xtp out of a .357; and i'll bet it's a deer slayer out of a long-barrel'd Handi' in a Maxi' chambering. i hope it works and i hope you'll tell us about it.

Hmmm. I'm wondering what the Hornady 265 gr. SP is constructed like? Equal to, harder, or softer than the Hornady 240 gr. xtp?? They seem to be working for Digger. http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=77100 Either way the .445 Super Mag. is doing some talking. It's HAMMER time.

What about the 270 speer gold dot? I think the 265 Hornady might be a little too tough for the 445sm. I believe it was designed for the 444marlin.
Nice to hear about your deer. Been thinking of getting a 44 barrel for my 500 S&W gun and rechambering. Already have a DW in 445, so loading would not be a problem :-)

Mac the Tc loading manual says 1900 fps from a 14inch barrel but i dont know for that for a fact as i have no chrono.sometime i will get with someone and shoot a few over one just to see.im sure the Nosler partitions would be a great bullet but they are alittle pricey
