1892 Muzzle Velocity Question
« on: November 19, 2005, 11:41:56 AM »
I have a Uberti pistol in 45 Colt.  I shoot 255 grain hard cast bullets over 5.8 grains of Titegroup.  Best guess places the MV from the pistol at about 800 FPS.

I am picking up an EMF 1892 carbine.  Is there any way to guestimate the MV of the same load out of the carbine?

With such a light load it won't be all that much different. You might pick up 100-150 fps but then you might not. A hotter load would gain 300-400 fps but a mild CAS type load will not.

I think with the long colt you would maybe find a gain of 200 ft per second. I have a Marlin Camp carbine in 45 ACP,when we compared chronographed pistol loads to the carbine's readings the average velocity increased by 160ft per second.
These lower powered pistol cartridges do not need the full barrel length of the carbine to achieve maximum velocity and at some point the bullet will actually start to slow down through friction.
With  the 357 and 44 magnum calibers you have such an increase in powder capacity that they can take advantage of the increased barrel length and velocity increases of up to 500 ft per second with some bullets could easily be obtained.

I know it's not the question you asked, but I use 6.8 grains of Unique under a 255 grain Lee RNFP for 680 out of a 7.5" barrel.  In my Trapper, I get 820 f/s.
