My old style contender exhibits some side play between the frame and barrel. It has a 14 inch 30-30 barrel that actually shoots very accurately. Cases last a long time. I just want to know if this is normal?

Is that when it is opened or shut? When it is open a lot of frames/barrels have play in them. Shut is a different story. Mine do not have any play in them when shut.

This is closed with a factory load in it. With a reload resized to a tight fit when the action is closed there is no play.

That does not sound good. Have you had the frame since it was new or is a used purchase? Just wondering.

This is kind of a different subject, but I have a Ruger .22 pistol where the barrel rocks back and forth and it is still very accurate. This resulted from letting some guys keep it off campus while I was in college. Hmmmm wonder if they put a bricks through it while I wasn't looking?

Possum, Is your ruger a MKII or a 22/45? If its a 22/45 you can place a plastic or brass shim between the barrel and frame to tighten it up. I had to do that to mine. My accuracy fell off until I shimmed it. I have heard that you can gently bend the tang that holds the assembly together on a MKII to get the same effect but I don't have first hand knowledge of that. KN
