My Home-made Do-It-Yourself 375 H&H
« on: November 16, 2005, 01:30:36 PM »
Iv'e wanted one for some time.. so when Charles Daly started importing the Zastava Mauser in  375 length,  got one.   Had E.R.Shaw spin up a chrome moly #3 and finish ream chamber...  had a mauser new replacement  military stock in teak.. don't know where it came from ..  but heavy and good solid crossbolt  to work with.     I figured if this thing was gonna split stocks from recoil, lets start with this one..   In my scope box, came up with an old weaver 1.5-4 steel tube, still in good shape, and has withstood the recoil of 338 win mag..   Had to set back barrel about .012 to headspace,  after trueing up front receiver ring square in a lathe..(wasn't too bad to begin with)...   got her all together this afternoon, and  took her out to my backyard range,,  swallowed hard, and pulled the trigger..  The recoil is not bad at all.. my son's 300 weatherby is LOTS worse..   got dark on me but got her on paper at 100 yds off the bench..  I'm stoked...    This one weighs in at 10and a half lbs, and is ugly as sin, but I believe it's got some potential..   more to follow..Les

Dear Les:
Your project sounds great, best of luck with it. Teak, ya say? Good way to add weight, don't think it will split. Beauty is in the eye, ect.ect. Does it feed smooth, fit right and shot good? By the way, I live within about 3 or 4 miles of E. R. Shaw, nice guys.                 Woodbutcher

Woodbutcher:  I broke the sharp edge at chamber rear after finish reaming..  holding correct COL, it feeds fine, no glitches yet.. was getting dark when I finaly touched her off..  bullets printing about 2 inches apart at 100 yds.. first handload  I tried..  not much daylight this time of the fall.  working every day..  I'm just fortunate to have a range right here at the house..  (one evening before season, I had to park the four-wheeler with the lights on the 100 yd target board, shot from the dark at the bench,  to verify zero)..  don't try that anywhere else..   LOL.. Woodbutcher:  don't think I'm saving much..  I watched a Interarms Mark X in 375  sell on Gunbroker for not much more than I'll have into this one.  I think I paid right at $300 for the action, and $148 shipped for the barrel..  Add to this a good synthetic stock that will survive on this caliber, and you're at $550 or so and that doesn't allow much for your time.. IF you have the tools to  put 'er together..  I guess it is a labor of love.. and a fun hobby.     I hope to take delivery of a CZ American 550 magnum in the same caliber tommorow evening..  a report will follow..  Les

Les, you said it better than me, cause I ain't no machinist. I just butcher wood! But it's great to hear that someone like you can do such things.
After I read your post, I went to the Charles Daly site and looked up the prices. And by the way, I noticed that those rifles have a 26" barrel, in 375. I like that!
I guess about a year ago, on this site, there was a link to an African hunting website, with reference to comments by a professional hunter. Seems the man administered the necessary tests to aspiring PHs for their licenses. He wrote of the qualities of the Mauser type action, as regards positive feed. His thoughts on the matter were very interesting!
The 375 H&H has had me fascinated for a long time. Seems like a real good choice for Alaska.
I'm looking forward to your report on the CZ. Thanks much!

Woodbutcher:  My son and I have booked a Grizzly/Dall sheep hunt for next Sept with Max Schwab Master Guide out of Talkeetna Alaska.  (great excuse to buy a new rifle. ).. I would have had an intrest in the 375H&H earlier if I had realized the recoil is so manageable.
The CZ550 Safari Magnum came this evening.. looks  GREAT!!..  One thing I noticed is there is an extra action mounting screw under the barrel..    I will load some rounds for it tomorrow evening, and take it with on Thanksgiving VACA..    The only thing left for me to hunt here in Wyoming for this fall and winter is coyotes.. guess the 375 would kill a coyote,  eh??  good way to get used to the rifle..
