Its just fun to shoot, less recoil than my Marlin 3030 but a little more than my 223. And its even less with the Survivor stock. If you reload you can get 1600 fps. with the 300 gr. bullet. Digger

Okay, I have a tendency to complain, so bear that in mind:

The recoil is very mild compared to my 7-08 or 308.  More than the 223, though, without a doubt.  My issue is with the "useless, shapeless club of a stock" (I cringed when I read that article) that the Handirifle uses.  My experience is that with the 300 gr XTP and 19.5 gr H4227, the recoil is mild but the muzzle jumps a lot.  I had shoulder surgery.  I can shoot 50 rounds and never feel a thing painwise.  But, I have a hard time keeping the muzzle down.  I really think that the stock is too short for me.  I know that it doesn't drop enough.

In any event, the 44 is my favorite barrel, my go to gun.  I can't maintain a sight picture with it though.

Great subject, as I beleive my next Handi will be in .44 Mag with the open sights. shout be a great 50 yard Deer gun :D As far as the "Site Picture" issue, maybe the Willimas Fire sights would help? I know they are great on my Sidekick!! Jack.

Slayer i myself love those fire sights but i also use a rear peep sight , i dont konw if you have ever tried them but they are worth a try i have seen so many people improve there accuracy by going to peep sights. I especially love them on lever action rifles.  Later Tanoose

M'05,

it says you're in your early 20's.   i don't think the recoil will bother you.  many years from now it might, unless you've already had some kind of an injury, that is.

you'll be as safe as a babe in his mothers arms!   and then, when you realize how much you like that .44 mag' you'll want to hot-rod it some more.   it's probably one of the 'sleeper' calibers in a good single-shot for close-range woods hunting; and the guys on this site doing the .445 supermag' conversion will tell you that it's even more of a good thing!

i hope you enjoy shooting one.

take care,

ss'

no recoil, VERY mild, almost like shooting a 22 lr. well, if you shoot 44 sepcials it is like shooting a 22, but mine wasn't accurate at all, I tried the tricks too, I got a rossi and it's GREAT.

the 44 mag with 240 grain bullets is almost identical to the 30-30 with 170 grain bullets according to Chuck Hawks site  http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm
VERY fun rifle to shoot......I've got the ruger auto carbine
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

I got a 44 barrel for my wife's Handi youth.  The rifle has a high comb for scope use.  Using the open sights with full power loads, recoil was very bad on the cheek.  This wouldn't be an issue with a receiver and stock intended for open sight use.
With the rifle scoped, full power loads are not bad for me, but the wife was not pleased.
With hard cast lead and 10-15 grains of blue dot, the rifle is lots of fun to shoot, in high volumes.

Now that I have my Ruger redhawk 44, I forsee loading lots of 44.

My 11 year old son think the 44mag(300gr. XTP running 1470fps) kicks like a light load 20ga. and the 445SM(300gr. XTP running 1975fps) kicks like his 3" Mag steel shot loads in 20ga.

His only reference is his Beretta 20ga. He will be using the 445SM loads tomorrow for deer.

Hope this helps.

Single Shot Shooter, are you saying you couldn`t get your .44 to group at all? I didn`t want to hear that :( Was puzzles me is I hear this reguraly about Handi`s, what gives on these? So you think the Rossi groups better? Thanks-Jack.

Slayer, use the search feature for 44 Mag, there are so many 44 mag threads on here that you'll have a hard time finding a page without one!!!   Most shooters find they shoot excellent with the right bullet, in fact, it's probably one of the most popular Handi calibers.....right behind the 45-70!!!

Recoil on my 44 Handi is much less than the recoil on my 44 Deerfield even when I am shooting heavier bullets.  Of course the eight 1-oz. Musket balls I put in the stock may have something to do with that but even before that the recoil was negotiable.  That being the upside, the downside is that I am still trying to find a load that will shoot accurately.  I just changed scopes to check on that and have loaded several light loads in 429, 430, 431, and 432 to see if any of these will do the trick.  I really like the cartridge and the feel of the rifle but if this doesn’t do it I will probably put the barrel up for sale and try to find a Rossi in 44 like Single Shot Shooter did.  But again to answer your question recoil should not be a problem at all.
