Proper sighting in proceedure for variable power scope?
« on: November 21, 2005, 11:02:11 AM »
When doing the final zeroing in on a variable power scope at 100 yards with live ammo, should the scope be set to full magnification?
Background: I have a 1.5-5X32 scope mounted on a 444 Marlin. I would like to zero it at 100 yards.

With your scope at 5x definitely.  Maybe it would not be necessary with a scope that goes over 10x, but definitely with 5x.

sight it with max x and check for POI change from min to max (there best not be any) then for kicks set the X you'll use when hunting (i have a 1.5-5x32 and i set at 3x) and see what your shooting is like. Select a X that you can control best offhand when hunting.

Lost sniper gave good advice. My rifles have 3X9 scopes. I've learned that I can shoot better at 100 yards at 9 power, so that's what I use sighting in. I hunt using 3 power in case there's a close range shot, so I check to be sure the 3X is hitting the same place.  In my scopes they are but in some scopes there can be a difference.
